I love that film so much.
Starts off with the chortle worthiness of Stalin lying face down in a pool of his own piss stroking out while his politburo argue about getting a doctor (the best ones have been sent on internal exile!) it’s just such a great end for a dictator. Great cast, great writing.
Right! I’m off to represent the Red Army at the buffet (in a thick Northern English accent). As more or less anyone who spends time with me will have heard me say.
Agreed… such an amazing film…
I love how no one tried to fake a sort of pseudo-Russian accent, but just spoke in their regular voices… Just… fucking perfection.
I’m sure I’ve mentioned before elsewhere to Elsewhere but I read the Italian comic in English and it was a great story but let down by the dialogue/writing and the lack of characterisation in the drawings of the characters. I felt confident then that the film would be excellent because Armando Ianucci and look at that cast!
So it turned out in spades.

Do you think the problem with the comic was the translation?
I would like it if more movies that take place in certain countries if the dialogue could be in their native language (if possible). I know that would not be popular but i’m pretty used to watching subbed movies and shows, so its not much of a barrier for me.
Probably but the drawing was also. The drawings gave no sense of character to the politburo. Unlike those great actors
@Grey_Devil me neither but, I love this and Last Temptation for refusing to do fake Russian accents. Part of the point here was the Soviet Union was loads of countries and they had very distinct accents. We wouldn’t get that if they did it in Russian.
Indeed, I’d like that too… but you’re less likely to get that out of hollywood, as there is a belief that Americans won’t read subtitles.
Yeah, absolutely… it was a “nation of nations” as one book I read in grad school called it.
The thing with the accents is such a bizarre convention. I remember that I was very confused when I learned about that one.
Or a union of republics, if you will. 
Didn’t “we” know this already? Wasn’t it even written about in the first account of this in a western language (Portuguese Jesuit iirc)?
look there is a lot of work to be done and frankly a lot of that is creating a place where anthropologists and linguists can be trusted with sacred and historical objects, but the reality is that “we” have always known that the quipu encoded more than numbers, had many uses, and a variety of situations in which they were used. Solely elite tax collectors was never a real runner.
I also believe Inca was the emperor and I just looked up what the empire was called Tawantinsuyu I think.
