I read that as 737 pilots all trying to take off at once, so apparently it is actually possible to imagine a greater terror than what occurred.
Nice to have a much-less-stressful mishap in the news.
A United Airlines 787 flying from Los Angeles to China had to turn around this weekend after it was discovered one of the pilots had taken off without their passport, the airline told CNN in a statement.
That seems really bizarre to me. Obviously he wouldnât have been able to get through Customs in China without his passport, but surely he could have landed the plane there? Couldnât the airline just have someone bring the passport with them on another flight to him later at that airport? Such an enormous waste of fuel and time.
On a guess - Chinese authorities mightâve taken a dim view of that? Also mightâve broken a few rules about fatigue management.
I once learned, to my surprise, that this move is an absolute no-no.
Iâm a dual citizen. Years ago, my resident-country passport was up-to-date but my other passport had expired. I was planning a trip on short notice to the other-passport country, and I would be there for a while, and I might hop in and out of the other-passport country a few times while I was there. All do-able with my resident-country passport, but wouldâve been a lot easier with my other passport.
I had to leave before the other passport would be ready, so I asked if the new passport could be couriered to me. The people at the consulate told me âAbsolutely not. A passport crossing borders without its owner is one of the most illegal things you can do with a passport.â I had not previously been aware of that.
Not recent, not a mishap, but worth remembering:
Follow-up:
Wait - the NTSB is still up and running?
My tv says two jets clipped wings at Reagan International Airport. Two American Airlines regional jets.
No injuries. But Reagan is sure looking unsafe lately.
