Aviation peeps: are they talking about the cable thingy that the aircraft tail hook connects to? So the aircraft landed, possibly hooked successfully, but the cable didn’t work?
Yes, the cable thingy.
Naval aviators (don’t call them pilots!) land at full power so they can take off again if they completely miss the cables. My presumption then is that they grabbed one of the cables but it didn’t tension properly to fully stop the aircraft.
They’re better than pilots!
Allegedly, the F-4 Phantom II could make a landing attempt with the engines barely more than idling and still spool up quick enough to pull up again with ease for another go if it had to.
Technically #3; the first one was lost to friendly fire shortly after take-off. No casualties.
