Um.... what.... aka, this is the dumbest thing I've ever read

Wow. That shows a pathological level of ignorance! I am guessing he thinks Betty Bowers is really the very best Christian, too.

Honestly, I think the one that didn’t get satire is the second comment. I don’t think the original was serious.

If Pixelated Boat’s comment was satire, I missed it entirely. It comes across as very MAGAty. I know a few folks who were big fans of Colbert in the old days, because they thought he was one of them!

WUT!!! You mean she’s NOT SINCERE IN HER FAITH!!!

Or maybe the second was satire too! It’s satire all the way down! Everything is satire now. Trump - satire. The war in gaza - satire. Climate change - satire. It’s not the anthropocene, it’s the satirepocine. Satireopode.

The phrasing felt just a little off to be serious to me, even if the sentiment is often genuine.

Looking at his timeline, he’s not a magat.

I guess I would say (as we do around here a lot) satire does not translate to a text medium very well without a signifier. A " :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: " or some such would go a long way to clarify.

(As I say that, I realize we haven’t really seen a lot of that issue since moving from TOP. Hmmm…)

But… but… isn’t it obvious what’s satire!!! /s Besides, here in the satirepocine, it’s all satire!

This is forever the problem when trying to use humor to discuss bigots. (Not that I’m against doing so, of course.) Many of the actual bigots are going to fail to even sense the message simply because they see nothing wrong with what they’re saying.

In a New Yorker article discussing All in the Family, Emily Nussbaum wrote:

To critics, the show wasn’t the real problem: its audience was. In 1974, the social psychologists Neil Vidmar and Milton Rokeach offered some evidence for this argument in a study published in the Journal of Communication, using two samples, one of teen-agers, the other of adults. Subjects, whether bigoted or not, found the show funny, but most bigoted viewers didn’t perceive the program as satirical. They identified with Archie’s perspective, saw him as winning arguments, and, “perhaps most disturbing, saw nothing wrong with Archie’s use of racial and ethnic slurs.” Lear’s series seemed to be even more appealing to those who shared Archie’s frustrations with the culture around him, a “silent majority” who got off on hearing taboo thoughts said aloud.

“He says what we want to say!” is an interesting statement, especially when I’ve never really heard one of those bigots being afraid to say those things, despite saying they were being silenced.

You go to hug your wife for comfort. Your wife is satire.

It’s definitely satire because that’s pixelatedboat’s whole thing, constantly, for years now. They’re as decently well known for it as someone can be on social media – they’re the one that made the post “Milkshake Duck” comes from. They also made this wonderful campaign poster for Kid Rock, which I still remember every time he shows up in political news.

I asked my husband, “Who is America’s dumbest Senator?” He got in one guess.

I keep forgetting that he exists… the senator, not your husband…

I wish I could. :disappointed:

He’s running for governor of Alabama in 2026, almost guaranteed to be the Repugnantcan candidate, already has a massive campaign war chest, etc. In short he’s a shoo-in.

The state Democratic Party is in total disarray, so any candidate is essentially on their own. Dr Will Boyd seems to be the best of the announced Dems so far. One can hope for miracles…

I’m sure it’s the hamberders, Diet Coke, and lack of meaningful exercise that’s causing the health issues, not fighting radicals.

When the level of the Great Salt Lake declined, the major religious organization in Utah said that people weren’t praying enough.

They the level of the lake rose so much it flooded some of the area around it. We used to say that people weren’t sinning enough.

Now the lake is really low, and what with the state of the US, I guess people have given up prayer altogether.
