I fail to see how that’s much different than the drug companies who only report the results of studies if they show some benefit.

Outliers are part of statistics. When you publish a poll that should be accurate to +/- 5%, 99 times out of 100, that means that for every hundred or so of those polls you conduct, one is going to have results that are off by more than 5%.

The fix isn’t to discard the results of that poll and re-run it, because you can’t know for certain that this one is the 1-in-100 outlier, and not the one you’re re-running. The fix is to educate people about statistics so that they can use all of the information to make an educated judgement about what these results mean.

For instance, I will now assign polls conducted through ALG polling less credibility, and polls done through Monmouth more credibility, because one group clearly doesn’t know how statistics work and the other does.
