Tassie political things:
I was a sometimes-active member of the Greens back in NSW, and I’ve recently signed up with the Tassie branch.
However…
The NSW Greens trace their roots back to socialist and communist activists from the 1960’s and ‘70’s, who joined up with the environmental movement when it gained momentum in the 1980’s. Lotsa links to the radical unionist tradition of Jack Mundy and the BLF’s Green Bans. NSW Greens tend to be hardcore working class radicals, focused on worker’s rights, resistance to urban “redevelopment” (AKA gentrification) and climate change.
In contrast, the Tas Greens came out of the 1980’s wilderness preservation movement and the campaigns against the Lake Pedder and Franklin River hydro dams. They tend to be middle-class people who are concerned about losing their access to natural beauty, focused on anti-logging, anti-whaling and endangered species conservation.
The leadership of the NSW Greens were strongly anti-imperialist. In contrast, the Twitter feed of the leader of the Tas Greens contains almost nothing but retweets of American-sourced anti-Chinese propaganda.
Somewhat frustrating.
