This is particularly an issue when trying to interpret Twitter sources, but it’s also a thing in general.

It is often difficult to discern the racial identity of Americans from a non-US perspective. Because a lot of American white people aren’t all that pale, and a lot of American Black people aren’t all that dark.

A few hundred years of rape by slaveholders has had a noticeable impact on the genetics of the place. Quite a large percentage of US whites would be seen as mixed PoC if you transplanted them to Scandinavia, and many US Black people might get a similar reception in Africa.

Of course, race in America isn’t really about genetics; it’s about social hierarchy.
