Car breaks down, can’t afford to fix it, shitty public transport makes them late for work, lose job, can’t pay rent, evicted, homeless, etc. etc. etc.
For poor people, just a few hundred dollars at the right time makes the difference between survival and collapse.

Interesting factoid I just noticed: Xinjiang contains 25% of China’s oil and natural gas reserves.
Which likely has some bearing on why (a) the Chinese government is intolerant of separatism in Xinjiang, and (b) why Western governments are so keen to promote separatism in Xinjiang.
Recall that China’s chief strategic weakness is their dependence on energy imports.
