It wasn’t mentioned in school. But some people are taught that it was a deal with the Devil, and they don’t mean the treaty requiring them to pay off their former colonizers and trapping them in centuries of unapayable debt, poverty, and environmental degradation.

Indeed. I always make sure to include it when I talk about the age of revolutions… And it’s probably more likely to be included now in world history. One of my daughter’s projects for school this year included a discussion of the Haitian revolution.
