Again, I got lucky…the history books around the house taught me otherwise.
And I honestly remember it being taught in school as a part of the Civil War, but not as any sort of racial history, but history of the US. This would’ve been starting in…1973 or 1974? I did have a Black history teacher in elementary school then. (and it might’ve been called “Social Studies”). Fifth grade, that was.
'Course, I was a pre-teen when school integration/busing started in Detroit (I had to walk, my new school was closer than my old one, lol), and we got quite a bit of cultural education…I still remember the first verse to “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing” (aka “The Black National Anthem”). But that was at my old school, the year prior to switching.
