The crux of the “ethics of military service” debate. Undiplomatically phrased, but Kiran has personal reasons to be cranky about this: she grew up under the US-backed Zia Ul-Haq.

The supermajority was only for a few months (which she declares as false); and the congress just focused on healthcare for children, worker’s protections in response to the market crash, and passing basically the only social justice bills to go through congress in the new millennium.

Sure, they could have done more - but they passed more legislation in that congress than any congress since LBJ. But it’s more convenient to declare the opposite when you want to complain about Democrats.

I thought it was for a full year, until Ted Kennedy’s Republican replacement got sworn in.

This is Beth’s typical response to that sort of thing:

No, Kennedy had to go out for a hospital stay leaving the votes at 59 before the special election.

I am strongly against her argument - especially if we want congress to not turn the US into a complete fascist state. Abusing the loopholes of office to permanently change the majority needed for legislation or nominations or anything else is not something I am a fan of, and it goes triply so because I don’t like two-party rule.

EDIT

And let’s not forget that Obama did abuse EOs because of Bush did and now Trump is abusing EOs. I mean, Obama made so many EOs that it lost the Democratic majority and became one of the planks of the GOP opposition that was popular.

(TLDL on the Citations Needed podcast: most of the FBI terrorist arrests you hear about are actually FBI-created plots used for entrapment)

No evidence of anything, but I wouldn’t be totally surprised to one day learn that the Pulse shooter was an FBI-groomed Islamist who got out of control.

That’s a ‘interesting’ line for him to take. I mean, who hasn’t supported a murderous anti-Semitic terrorist organisation? We all have our foibles! We all make mistakes!

Actually, looking back at the Hamas/Hizbollah friends debacle I found this quote from Chuka Umunna. Looks like nothings changed.

He added: “One of the things I have found most insulting about this issue of antisemitism in our party is the suggestion that I or any other member of our party has raised this issue because we are somehow disgruntled, careerist Blairites.”
