Large chunks of the internet (including the Boing Boing BBS, but not BB itself) are still inaccessible. Elsewhere is behaving a bit strangely, too; I can’t undo likes as normal.

Anyone else having internet weirdnesses?

Edit: internet normal on my phone, which uses a different provider to the home wifi. Looks like it’s Telstra that’s fucked up.

Edit again: nope, it was me. Power cycling my iPad fixed it. Still can’t remove likes, though.

Okay, now that I have the internet working properly again:

The USA has been bombing Syria since 2014.

As for the argument that chemical attacks are a special kind of evil, justifying an extreme response:

So when should we expect the missile strikes on Ankara and Washington?

As always, the West’s response is inconsistent, opportunistic and hypocritical.

The Syrian rebels have been sheltering in tunnel complexes dug beneath the city. The Viet Cong also used tunnels for shelter during the Vietnam war.

Guess how the Americans tried to deal with that.

For more recent history, see the suffocation attacks conducted by the USA in Afghanistan:

Or the US/Saudi use of white phosphorus in Yemen, Iraq and Syria:

Churchill was also a fan of chemical weapons, BTW.

Does any of this make Assad any less of a murderous bastard? No.

But taking the West’s justifications for military violence at face value is, at best, highly naive.

Entertaining comments on the MSNBC tweet.

How does this mythology of “heroic US journalism” survive? US news media is globally infamous for being utterly crap.
