Putn is arming Russian-speaking fascists in Ukraine, specifically.
I was checking Alexander Reid Ross yesterday, to see if he said anything about the Ukrainian People’s Party/Ukrainian Party of Socialists-Independents. He didn’t. but he discussed more recent events.
Other sources vary from claiming the UPP/UPSI wanted to drive all other ethnicities from the country (“Ukrainian People’s Party” in the Internet Encyclopedia of Ukraine) to claiming they were “moderate” because they weren’t socialist (Bohachevsky-Chomiak in Hunczak’s Ukraine 1917-1921).

To be clear: I don’t think #4 is the most likely, I think that it’s the most alarming. Because, if it were true, it suggests serious strategy behind the Trump show.
I suspect that the reality is more of a blend of the first three.
Trump does have dodgy Russian business contacts, and the nature of the Russian state is such that there is very little distinction between the oligarchs and the government. OTOH, you can say the same thing about the USA.
Trump is a fool who can’t concentrate long enough to read a menu; he is not micromanaging troop deployments or closely monitoring intel sources. If the military brass decide to write their own policy and use their own judgement, it is doubtful that Trump would even notice.
Trump genuinely does envy and admire dictators, and routinely says stupid shit relating to that. It isn’t just Putin; see also Duterte etc. He’s like this with all of them.
