“Giving up on democracy” (temporarily) does not necessarily imply armed rebellion, BTW.
The Trumpeters will not hesitate to exploit their position to whatever degree is necessary to extract their desired outcome from the electoral process.
In my opinion, the democratic solution to fascism was a lost cause the second that Gorsuch was sworn onto the USSC. Which is why I’ve been loudly calling for peaceful revolution ever since then.
I have to agree, the only sizable and most meaningful protests in the past year has been when the left and center right came together because the center right has the numbers and the left has the policies people would actually like once in place - especially if there is compromise. There is no way to claim that the protests over the Muslim ban or after Charlottesville in Boston are anything other than people to the left of a cartoonish GOP forced to call anything not a literal Nazi a communist. The left is also yet to win a single election and the left in power has been very clear it is willing to abandon their “identity politics” principles to enter primaries where it doesn’t even make a lot of sense.
The other problem is that if the Democratic Party dies, then just like with the Whigs the country will be driven by the party left over across decades. The best that could be hoped for while the GOP continues to control all three branches of federal government is that a few states have progressive leadership that has the GOP literally change federal law to screw over like they are perfectly willing to do.
Being unwilling to unite under the shared principles of the vast majority of the country is what is ruining the country. The popularity of single issue voting, party fanatism (for or against), and unwillingness to take steps in the right direction will continue to be what drives the country further and further right because they have their ducks in a row.
Verrit isn’t a social media platform, it is a pro-Democrat media outlet that is built for dumping into Twitter links. It’s stupid and done better elsewhere, but it isn’t exactly Gab - the social media platform literally built by and for Nazis.
during the primaries i thought there was a chance that the republicans might have been having a whig moment but i had not counted on the power of racism and white identity politics to carry so many nominally democratic voters. at the same time i found the media coverage of the two candidates to be so out of line with scandals which swirled around them that i felt as though i were watching a bizarre parody of an election directed by luis bunuel or david lynch. seen in that light, comey’s tremendous last minute “fuck you” to the clinton campaign makes perfect sense. it could only make sense in a surreal universe.
anyway, i was hoping for the implosion of the republican party and its splitting into a center-right party which could rejoin reality and start offering realistic alternatives to democratic proposals, albeit ones that would likely be too conservative for my tastes. but it was not to be. it is clear that some members of the congressional republican party are unwilling to accept 45’s reality and have already withdrawn from the most extreme aspects of trumpism. that is a modestly hopeful sign given how much of the g.o.p. have seemingly determined to drive right off the cliff with him. i agree that these are profoundly troubling days with more to come but i don’t think evil will have its way forever. the future is not a boot stomping a human face forever.
