I had to go back and check, but 538 put Bernie Sanders at about a 20% chance of winning the primary against Hillary Clinton in fall 2015. I’m never really sure what these types of takes are aiming at, but if you use just the data they collect 538 has figured out general trends well even if their analysis manages to be extremely lazy and partisan. 538 also was the only outlet really hammering in that Trump has a chance and backing it up with reasons.

I think that they’re more focused on 538’s current stuff rather than 2016 issues. The 5% thing isn’t a 538 reference, I think.

OTOH, I stopped bothering with 538 once I realised that they hadn’t adapted to the new reality. I don’t follow them closely these days.

The main reason I posted that was just for the observation that Our Revolution win about half of their primaries. Given that they mostly back longshots, that’s a remarkably good record…which is routinely spun as a failure in the corporate press.

Posting for a few reasons…

  1. Poverty in the US returning people to third-world conditions is actually a thing.

  2. What is al-Jazeera’s angle here? They publish a lot of these centre-left empathy pieces. I can never quite figure out their editorial bias; it’s not as simplistically US-critical as RT, but the Qataris aren’t paying for it because of a deep philosophical commitment to journalism either.

This is an aside, but something needs to be done about the far-right cribbing from the left. To the majority in the US liberalism = far left = socialism = a whole bunch of other things. While I appreciate the left making itself distinct from Democrats and the establishment, there has to be a better job communicating what these things mean to a flyby reader.

I don’t even come close to having an answer, but it is a persistent problem that should be addressed at some point.

Speaking of which…

Reminder that pre-WWII socialism was significantly Jewish, particularly in the US. That history isn’t just ignored, it’s actively suppressed.
