Brittany is an Air Force vet, BTW. This is not an apathetic college kid thing.

Even if we forgive the cheese factor, do y’all get the messed-upness of portraying racism as a failing of equally balanced and equally blameworthy sides?

Appalling article.

At the time Star Trek: The Original Series aired, even commenting on racism in such an oblique manner was pretty much unheard-of. I can appreciate why they might want to simplify the message to “All racism is bad, mmkay?” from “White people have been exploiting everybody else for centuries and don’t look likely to stop.” Especially given that pretty much everyone up and down the network food chain who could cancel the show was a white guy.

If you’re referring to Cory referencing it today… Yeah, I can see that being more problematic.

Now that it’s over, and I don’t have to worry about a jinx:

Grateful that we apparently got through Halloween without a major white supremacist terror attack. It was an obvious time to do it…

Even in 1966, it was deeply messed up. How can you look at the Civil Rights movement and say that the problem is on both sides?

It ties into the whole liberal vs socialist clash of analysis. Last Battlefield miseducated viewers, indoctrinating them with the bullshit liberal analysis of racism.

I think it was actively harmful.

Listening to centrist Americans discussing the authors of the Constitution is remarkably reminiscent of Weyoun discussing the Founders.

Yeah, I do… not one of the best episodes on thinking about the issue of race… go watch Deep Space Nine’s “Far Beyond the Stars” episode instead… did far more to directly justify Roddenberry’s often ham-fisted attempts to project a human future without racism… “you can’t kill an idea… it’s real, in my mind.” There is a very good reason that Brooks decided to direct that episode, and that’s because it allowed him to take Roddenberry’s failures and turn them into a far more effective commentary on race in America.

I made it 38 seconds into that video.

It does require a decent amount of Hank tolerance.
