When Pat Cleburne proposed protecting what they could by trading slavery for helotry, other Confederate officers decided he was politically unreliable… And helotry would still be far from freedom.

Most of the online dictionaries I’m pulling up treat the two words synonymously, and Wikipedia describes the Helots as slaves.

Do you mind elaborating upon the distinction between the two terms?

It’s somewhat unclear. Cleburne was thinking of recruiting soldiers, like the Spartans, but otherwise may have been thinking of something like Russian serfdom. Serfs could be sold, but most could only be sold with their land, so most couldn’t be sold south, couldn’t be separated from their families as easily, etc.

Point being, he wasn’t proposing freedom.
