My jaw hurts. The outsourced dentists around here seem to always fuck up. Had to go emergency dental care get some socialized medicine and they say my head will hurt for days.

Blue Jam is good for pain.

My main enjoyment is with the British series No Such Thing as a Fish. I found it during the pandemic and when I started going back to work (~45 min each way), I started at their first one and went forward. Took a few years to go through their entire catalog and I can say they got better each time. Really good chemistry between the hosts and great, VERY nerdy content from the people who research QI.

Once I found them, I looked for similar and found a small podcast called UnderUnderstood. 4 hosts who dive deep into one topic. Self-financed so it was a much less polished and scheduled as the last one. Hosts are long time friends but sometimes their presentation is a bit off. Has basically gone to Patreon only, but has a good catalog to go through. Also has my favorite discussion of Berenstein/Berenstain Bears controversary.

Pod Save America, a classic liberal political podcast. Hosts are great with great chemistry but I’ve stopped listening simply because there’s a lot of doom and gloom right now (rightly so, yes) and I have enough drama in my personal life.

Daily Show - ears edition. An obvious one, although I’m trying to listen to less politics. Not as enjoyable as watching the show.

Stuff You Should Know is my new drive-in podcast. Apparently there’s 10+ years of content for me to dig through. I’ve been sampling lots from this year and I like the hosts and content. There was a great 2-part episode on ADHD that was amazing. Just yesterday I listened to one that bummed me out - talked about how bad our food was before it was highly regulated (because of recent politics, again). Episode was from 2018 so they had no idea that 6 years later it would be crazy relevant.

I really like to consume stuff that lets me learn more about “normal daily” things. I’m the type of person who enjoys the making of a film over the film half the time.

A great episode of X Minus OneMr Costello, Hero

A story about surveillance and fear-mongering.

Contains the great line, “They’re not dangerous, they’re just different!”

Sixteenth Minute (of Fame) is a weekly show from Jamie Loftus that takes a closer look at the internet’s main characters – one part reported, one part interviews, and one part Jamie collapsing her permanently internet-damaged brain. Whether it’s an enduring meme or a dreaded Character of the Day distinction, it’s the kind of notoriety that often results in little money, unwarranted attention, and a confusing blurred line of consent. What do you do when you get more attention and judgement than any one person is built to handle? The Sixteenth Minute of Fame is the place where we figure that out, putting people in the context of the moment they’ve been frozen inside of.

This story of censure in the face of paranormal beliefs is not supported by the information I found. According to publicly available documents from the Oregon Medical Board, Powell’s license was indeed suspended around the time her book was released, but the reason was a pattern of practice including “poor management of therapeutic boundaries, incomplete chart notes […], a disorganized approach to treatment, a failure to respond to significant patient symptoms, and concerns over her management of patient medications.” She was accused of relying extensively on phone consultations to manage complex psychiatric patients without seeing them face-to-face, thus posing “a significant risk of harm to these patients.” When asked to stop practicing medicine during the investigation, Powell declined. Her licensing board also asked her to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, which she did. She was subsequently allowed to resume practicing medicine under a strict list of conditions, which were waived in April 2012. The medical board’s website now lists her license as “lapsed.”

Joe Pera’s new season of Drifting Off starts on Monday. It’s a podcast that can be used as a sedative before bed, but it’s also Joe Pera and has his weird and wonderful humor sprinkled throughout like seasoning in a soup (I just listened to S1E1, it’s about soup).

I found out about it because I was looking for the episode of his TV show about fish fry (happy Friday everyone). I didn’t find that because I got sidetracked by all of the other Joe Pera news, like the new season of his podcast. And this article about casting his Nana in the TV show by talking to ladies at fish frys in Milwaukee.

It’s from six and a half years ago, but maybe you haven’t read it. I hadn’t until today. I guess I should try harder to keep up on Joe Pera news.

I had someone explaining to me at a music festival last week why this podcast was the work of a skeptic; how the researchers had been persecuted for their work; how we’d have to change all our thinking etc etc. And all the while, all I could think was this does provide a shitload of evidence; not for telepathy, but for our ongoing epistemic crisis, like we needed anymore evidence.

It was nice to see a recognition in the review that these aren’t victimless crimes:

The worst part of this story is what is happening to the parents and to their children. It’s easy—and necessary—to highlight what Ky Dickens got wrong in her reporting. It’s harder—and it borders on the cruel—to place any blame at the foot of the parents of these children. They were told that their child might never speak or have a normal life. Then came along a narrative that flipped the script: their child was actually profoundly special and could communicate in a way they had never thought possible. From being considered disabled, their child was suddenly humanity’s saviour. Wouldn’t you want to believe that as well?

Listening to Ep 148 of You Are Not So Smart - Rule Makers & Rule Breakers. There’s some really interesting information in relation to some of the tribalism, decision making, rules and culture of a given group, region, etc. My thoughts based on what i’ve listened to are that society tends to fall under “loose” or “tight” cultures, where in one people might have more freedom and in others people are scrutinized and controlled more. This can be driven by uncertainty, outside threats, etc. and people’s inclination of moving towards less freedom is often due to a desire for stability even if ultimately they will be unhappy under a stricter regime.

The episode was quite interesting and its given me something new to consider when looking at the state of things.
