Kicking… came out in '86, which was longer ago than I care to contemplate.
I saw the Bad Seeds in '86 at a fairly big venue in Downtown Detroit. I climbed to the middle of the speaker tower stage L, so got a far better view than what my 5’1" arse normally had. {Needless to say, that perch is no longer available to anyone!} I even had room to dance a bit. They were fantastic, and played lotsa stuff I love.
Mr Cave did not seem to demand worship so much as wanting to scare fuck out of us. His was a very intimidating presence as he stalked shrieking, crooning, screaming, whispering across the stage.
Later the same year, just after my birthday in June, I got to see Einstürzende Neubauten at a rather more intimate venue: Greystone Hall. I was thrilled to see the luscious Blixa Bargeld twice in a year. There was a wide shelf running across the left wall, a place to lean against and put your BYOAnything. I climbed up onto that and stood watching them from there, dancing my arse off. They’d released Halber Mensch that year, and I was ecstatic to get to see them perform Yü-gung, still my favorite song of theirs.
