I would have expected Le Monde of all publications to use the correct translation of the German word Brandmauer into English: cordon sanitaire

A number of people would like Charlie Angus to run for leader of the NDP, but he’s set to retire at the end of his term. He’s old style NDP; a bull terrier nipping at the heels of power.

As horrible as everything is, Merz fucking this up was a much needed relief.

Right now my hypothetical scenario for March/April, possibly May is:

  • FDP fails to clear the 5% hurdle
  • Die Linke wins three or four direct mandates
  • AfD is quite successful, but loses votes to BSW
  • BSW narrowly clears the 5% hurdle
  • CDU/SPD/Greens form a coalition government, but without Merz as chancellor - a price the CDU gladly pays because a) they want back into power and b) Merz pissed off enough of them, either with muscling himself into the top spot (blocking other, younger hopefuls) or with his latest antics (or both)
  • Merz Takes off in one of his private planes and crashes it into the Reichstagkupppel

It’s amazing how my opinion of this country has changed throughout my life. I used to think being born in the US was a great gift. Now I’m glad I have never had children.

Yeah, I get that. Somewhere in my 20s I realized that we’ve nearly always been a domineering, resource-grabbing empire, with most of its citizens coerced at best into servitude to the wealthy. What’s happening now seems from a zoomed-out view like a foreseeable late stage.

But of course, maintaining for too long such a quasi objective or academic view can neuter one’s realization of whose pain is still to come, and of just how one might act in resistance.

Following Trump’s decision at the weekend to impose trade duties on America’s closest trading partners, Russian President Putin said Sunday that Trump’s second administration would “restore order” in Europe.

“I assure you: Trump, with his character, with his persistence, he will restore order there quite quickly. And all of them, you will see — it will happen quickly, soon — they will all stand at the feet of the master and will wag their tails a little. Everything will fall into place,” Putin told pro-Kremlin journalist Pavel Zarubin, who presents the primetime “Moscow. Kremlin. Putin” program on the Rossiya-1 state TV channel. The comments were reported
