Historically, the Balkans has been a bellwether for major events in the rest of Europe and the world… we do well to watch what’s going down there…
“I would like to see Kosovo go back to the table with the EU and United States,” said Haki Abazi, who was once Kurti’s deputy prime minister but has recently joined one of the smaller opposition parties, the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo.
“If Kurti remains in power, I think what we’re going to see is the US basically acting swiftly against him by pulling out its troops from Camp Bondsteel [Nato peacekeeping headquarters in Kosovo] and also imposing sanctions to the point where Kurti is going to be blacklisted.”
I hope that the growing student movement in Serbia are done with the continued attempts to destabilize Kosovo from Belgrade, because it’s not in their interest to have a nationalist uprising on their southern border, which will likely empower Serb ultra-nationalist in Belgrade itself…
As predicted, Kurti’s party won, but not by enough to govern alone. He’ll need to form a coalition government, and I’m not sure how likely that is to happen…
