Wait, that’s not The Onion? They seriously presented that headline and called it analysis?
Indeed. I was so disgusted that I couldn’t click through to read the “analysis.” (Oh wait, I don’t actually read any NYT articles. I only go there because they bought Wordle.)
I mean, I sort of get it, but only if the ‘analysis’ goes into why you can’t just appease or sweet-talk a bully, which doesn’t seem likely based on the headline.
And a bully who is more like an out-of-control toddler? Yeah, there’s nothing Zelenskyy (notice the NYT didn’t spell the name of a country’s president correctly) could possibly do to get consistent support from the current U.S. Administration anyway.
My money is on him mixing them up.
Is cutting undersea cables the maritime equivelant to rolling coal?
Only if rolling coal directly leads to international sabotage
Welp, clearly AFD sees their returns in the elections as a mandate to double down on the nazi shit.
It’s infuriating that they’re still legal. It’s happening again, and the so-called Fortified Democracy is doing nothing.
I guess the logo of the BfV is accurate after all. One federal eagle, constantly looking left, with its back to anything happening on its right.

This is a fairly amazing “come from behind” lead on the part of the Canadian Liberal Party; polling 27% behind Poilievre’s Conservative Party only a few weeks ago, they now have a slight lead of 2%. This is of course, only a poll, and in the end, the only poll that matters is the election. Whenever that might be.

Ontario has it’s provincial election tomorrow, and Doug Ford’s Conservatives are projected to win, probably a majority.
It has been a huge turnaround in a short period of time, and the timing indicates that it’s all due to fears that the CPC will be too subservient to Trump.
Worth noting, about half of the “catch up” for the Liberals seems to be from a drop off in support for the NDP, rather than swaying voters directly back from the conservatives. This perhaps indicates that the population are already mindful of tactical voting, which they wouldn’t have to be if Trudeau had actually delivered electoral reform like he promised.
Yep; and if Carney wins the leadership race for the Liberals, I suspect that there will be more of a jump. I have my qualms about Carney; he’s never held any political office, so I’m not sure he has the stomach and the tough hide needed at this time. If he’s wise, he’ll fill his cabinet with people like Freeland, who have a lot of experience, and of course, he understands economics better than maybe anyone, and maybe that’s exactly what we need.
Lloyd Axworthy and Allan Rock co-wrote an op ed in Toronto Star this morning (arch link) supporting Christia Freeland. The main point was that she had been in the political machinery for a while and would have better judgement, know how, and connections. I don’t disagree; dropping Bill Morneau in as Finance Minister when he was a political rookie led to some very unpopular mistakes.
I broadly agree with Axworthy and Rock’s points, and think Freeland would do a superb job. Her gender, her USCAM negotiations, and her support for will be an impediment to any attempts, futile as they may be, at dealing with T—p constructively. T—p won’t give her the time of day, and he is a factor we have to deal with for while longer.
Carney does have far more experience in political circles than Michael Ignatieff did. I was in a meeting a few day’s ago with an acquaintance of Carney’s and I think it might be a foregone conclusion. The race hasn’t been nasty, so either way I think both Freeland and Carney will figure in the next cabinet.
