Similar in the sense that a big pile of something was mishandled.

We’re not yet sure what chemical was stored at the site. Wikipedia says (without citation) that the containers may have contained sodium perchlorate, an industrial chemical that can be used as a solid rocket fuel.

In Beirut, the explosive was a stockpile of tons of ammonium nitrate, a fertilizer that can also explode under some conditions. A van full of this stuff (mixed with diesel to make it easier to explode) was the bomb used in Oklahoma City.

For the rest of Canada, we have to weigh the existential that is the U.S. right now and the threat of Alberta seceeding, so it really is threat assessment and which is the more serious of the two.
