Is this gonna be a return back to the old days of authoritarian rule in South Korea?

I’m following a thread on South Korea and the National assembly voted to end Martial law.

Here’s the thread (You’ll need a Bluesky account to read it though):

Once martial law is declared it’s depressingly no surprise that a vote of parliament tends to be ineffective; it’s kinda right there in the name ‘martial law’. Sure hope this nightmare (foreshadowing?) is resolved back to democracy as soon as possible -sigh-

Looks like the result is just more of the same. You can’t form a government without including at least one of the two flavours of neoliberalism, and you might just end up with both. Again.

I’m reading that according to the South Korean constitution the president has a legal right to invoke martial law under certain conditions (it’s highly questionable whether current conditions apply) but also that the president is legally required to oblige when the National Assembly demands the lifting of martial law with a majority vote. So yeah, the reality on the ground is that it’s always hard to take power away from a president intent on seizing it, but if the guy is clearly violating the constitution that’s going to open him up to more legal consequences if and when he’s eventually removed from power. Even the leader of his own political party is speaking against this move so he may be running out of friends (and any pretense of legitimacy) fast.

If the military backs it, then all the legal niceties go out the window… rule of law is always backed up by who has the monopoly on force/violence…

Well hey, the president of South Korea actually agreed to honor his legal requirements to end martial law following the vote in parliament. So that’s nice.

I thought the entire point of martial law was to prevent pesky parliaments from tyring to “vote” against it.
