Still have a cold, and now my wife has it too. We are both coughing, mostly in the morning.
Our antibodies are on strike, and we don’t have any scabs. [JOKE DELETED]

I say frequently that pediatrics is 98% Disney princesses and unicorns farting rainbows, and 2% the deepest darkest pits of hell. Had to do an exam on a kid who had been SA’d at daycare. I feel like I need to puke. The cops know there is almost never physical evidence, but they require the exam. Kid was absolutely terrified. I did the best I could. Fuck…
I’m having an arborist work on some trees; a couple need pruning, and a couple, sadly, are coming down. Manitoba maples should never be allowed to take root in the city, close to buildings, but these were here when I moved in. So I have this giant spider lift in my tiny yard, and I think it’s banged the house a couple of times. I hate having people in my space.
Geez, not good.
We had a huge 1-2 centuries year old oak taken down recently. It was right next to the house, with a huge branch over our bedroom. We miss the tree but don’t miss the possibility of getting crushed.
They took down a dead 80 year old ash tree for me a few years ago, and I’ve slept better ever since. It was about 6 ft from the house.
Heartbroken for the child and also for you
So many hospitals around here have shut down their pediatric services, it all gets thrown back to our office (as the only one that still takes Medicaid) and we do not have the personnel nor the equipment to do this properly. In this case, it did not really apply, but we cannot do rape kits, we have no ability to execute chain of custody, and we have no SANE nurses. It’s utterly stupid, but it is where we are.
Legally, in Illinois, the victim would not have been brought to you (unless the parents did it without knowing the rules). SA victims have to be brought to medical facilities with both the physical necessities such as a Vitullo kit, a private room, etc. and also trained staff members available 24/7 (can be an outside service if the location only has one person).
Oh, and the kits can be used for finding proof of the other person’s skin cells, clothing, and such…not just semen or spit.
From the distal end of this horrifying process, thanks for your service. It is literally putting your sanity on the line to do what you can to prevent this from happening to someone else and that is metal as hell.
I wish we had that here. It’s pretty much “you are on your own, good luck.” And VA is one of the states with a trigger law to kick huge numbers off Medicaid as soon as Il Douche axes the federal support. It’s going to get much worse.
So sorry for the child. I also want to send a hug your way. You take care, too.
My grandmother died today. I’m sad about it and tear up a little when I think about her, but I’m handling it well. Probably because she was 96, had dementia and has been in a nursing home for a couple years now. I’ve been prepared for it.
I’m so sorry to hear that… were you close to her?
Not as close as I was with my other grandma, but I wouldn’t say I wasn’t close to her either. Prior to her dementia I’d see her once or twice a year and talk to her on the phone occasionally. I think the bigger feeling of loss for me occurred a couple years ago when conversations became difficult due to short term memory issues.
