GURPS Banestorm redux

Sasha DeStijl:

BTW, keep in mind that the listed prices represent how much it would cost you to have them made. What you can sell them for is an entirely different matter.

Can I pencil in nailbiting as one of Hayuā€™s undefined quirks? She isnā€™t obvious or obnoxious about it, but it means nine short ragged fingernails (which show in the ragged gloves). She does it mostly when alone and bored.

BTW:

TL3: THE MIDDLE AGES (600 A.D.+)
Signature Technology: Steel.
Other Technologies: Three-field rotation; mold-board plow; heavy horses; flying buttress; windmills and widely used water mills; distillation; compasses; numerals with zero.
Social Organization: Universal religions; monasticism.
War: Mounted knights; castles; counterweight mechanical artillery; early black-powder weapons.

TL4: THE AGE OF SAIL (1450 A.D.+)
Signature Technology: Full-rigged ships.
Other Technologies: Cast iron; the printing press; telescopes; celestial navigation; early synthetic medications.
Social Organization: Nation-states and absolute monarchy; overseas empires; widespread literacy.
War: Cannon; musket and pike; early bayonets; formal military drill; sailing warships armed with cannon; star forts replace castles.

TL5 is the Industrial Revolution, 1730 or so.

So Thwip can invent/build anything pre-industrial (although anything involving gunpowder is inadvisable due to local reasons). He could also try unreliable prototypes of early industrial stuff (explosion-prone steam engines etc).

Importantly, thereā€™s also the point that Thwip can easily build low-tech stuff (medieval siege artillery etc) at the absolute peak of its development. What TL3 engineers struggle to achieve, Thwip can do casually.

If he ever decided to retire from adventuring, he could make a fortune in either civil or military engineering. Leonardo da Vinci.

Okay, took another look tonight and it does look like I expected. :relaxed: I think I might have misread some things on it last night and then confused myself counting the totals of the groups with the totals of things in the groups.

So whatā€™s getting dropped, if anything? The mace and morning star?

Does this mean his making an air pistol (with fire bullets if that idea can be done) is doable?

Though I do think putting a bayonet on his rifle might be an idea regardless of whatever results from messing with his gun.

In my head canon Thwip will go down in history like Leonard of Quirm as the inventor of ā€œThe Very Fast Coffee Machineā€

TL4 firearms were still fairly crude; matchlocks, early flintlocks.

Thwipā€™s rifle is TL5; it uses a few parts that TL4 metalwork would find difficult.

Itā€™s stretching his abilities, but as he has the rifle already as a prototype Iā€™d be willing to let him try making a miniaturised version.

The tricky bit is making air cylinders that donā€™t explode.

Maybe a sawed-off shotgun version to go with his long coat? Regardless, bayonet is a must get. Weā€™ll focus on getting the magic bullets for an upgrade.

Also, I feel I must snarl at the followingā€¦

Youā€™ve already replied 3 times to @Wanderfound in this particular topic.

Shut the fuck up, BBS. Important RPG talk is happening.

If you make a pair of pistols and get appropriate fast-load and off-hand weapon skills, I could probably be persuaded to let Thwip fire one pistol while simultaneously recocking the otherā€¦

If we can make Thwip this worldā€™s Idris Elba Iā€™m all for it.

Practically: Letā€™s stick with a bayonet and magic bullets that might explode in the barrel. That sounds more exciting for everyone around him.

Magic bullets turn his rifle into an all-purpose grenade launcher, BTW. Itā€™ll be a few hundred dollars per bullet, but you can reasonably afford just about any 2-energy or less spell.

That could just be 2d of damage, but it could also be gas, smoke, fire, water, oil, sleep, stun, web, illuminate, destroy stone, etc. And you can get 'em enchanted for +1 to hit and +1 damage for about a hundred dollars more.

Thwip might also want to look into acquiring some ultralight armour. A light mail vest with a Lighten spell on it gives DR3 for only 9lbs.

Iā€™ll be posting Sashaā€™s first post when I get home this afternoon

Sasha is using the less formal Brother Traveller over the more formal Brother Stranger in order to appear friendlier. This still gives the impression that heā€™s an oddball who hasnā€™t had much practice speaking to real people.

Yā€™all keep chatting amongst yourselves. Iā€™ll jump in if anything happens.

Is it too late to sign up?

Nope.

Wotcha got in mind for a character? See below for examples.

Well, I got hold of a pdf of the Banestorm source book and I was pretty interested in the Ministry of Serendipity vs Underground Engineers conflict thatā€™s running in the background of the setting.

Would this idea fit in with the campaign? - A soldier/spy from an Underground Engineer cell on the run after a partially successful, but ultimately disastrous, attempt to infiltrate the Ministry.

Possibly; letā€™s take this to PMs to avoid spoilers.

Introducing medieval spy extraordinaire, and industrial revolutionary, " Eoin (Owen) Reed"

ā€œEoinā€ grew up in [redacted], East Megalos the son of craftsmen, from a long line of craftsmen. His parents had a reputation as skilled makers in [redacted], but Eoin showed little aptitude for the family trade. He was the black sheep of his family. Widely seen as a restless trouble-maker that couldnā€™t just mind his own business when he saw something wrong, although he usually managed to get off lightly
Because where his parents and siblings could look at something and see how it worked and where the pieces fit, Eoin could do the same for people. He had a knack for figuring out what people wanted, and what to say or do to get a certain reaction.
(And some stuff I think is ok in the open thread, but Iā€™m not 100% on that. So spoilers)

All his life, ā€œauntsā€ and ā€œunclesā€ of all races would occasionally pop in to visit his parents. At first heā€™d be shooed out with the other younger siblings, but as he got older they slowly included him in the discussions.
Most of the time they talked in technical detail Eoin couldnā€™t quite follow anyway. Other times theyā€™d argue philosophy and intriguing, but dangerous, notions like ā€œprogressā€ and ā€œdemocracy.ā€
Some visitors never returned, which was sometimes met with a shrug and more often with sombre expressions and hushed voices.
Thatā€™s how he first met [redacted], one of the visitors who introduced Eoin to a group of people who wanted those notions to be more than ideas discussed in secret. Who wanted to do something about their disappearing friends.
[redacted] taught Eoin how to fight, and got him started in a trade more suited to his aptitudes.

But that was another life, and many mistakes ago.

Questionnaire

  1. Who is/was their closest friend?

  2. Where do they hope to end up?

Somewhere were anyone is duly rewarded for their efforts and cared for according to their need, regardless of birth. Where people are free to explore new ideas and try to make life better.
And if that doesnā€™t exist? Well, heā€™ll settle for being a part of making it.

  1. What is their general approach in a fight? Do they have a favourite move/tactic?
Eoin believes the best fight is one that never starts. He tends to try and use his words, his wits or an unseen blade to nip violent opposition in the bud, but if things kick off, Eoin will try to end it with brutal efficiency.
Heā€™ll simply batter through and hack apart an unskilled enemy. But against skilled enemies, he throws out feints and distractions to create an opening for a decisive blow.

  2. Describe their physical appearance, including eye and hair colour, clothing style etc.
Slightly above average height and build, with a forgettably handsome face. Mid-length dark brown hair and light brown eyes. A crooked scar running almost parallel to his mouth is just visible on his chin behind a still-freshly grown beard.
His current clothing would suggest Eoinā€™s a reasonably well-off soldier or mercenary, and he appears to be in his mid to late 20s.
    He looks like thisā€¦

Except the mantle/collar? is a cloak, and the belt is less ornate and more of a regular belt.

  3. What is their attitude to religion, native and foreign?
Eoin keeps up a front of orthodox Megalan Christianity, but he secretly despises the church which he sees as oppressive, greedy and hypocritical.
In reality, he believes God doesnā€™t need priests or organised religion as middle-men. Religon is a personal thing.
Heā€™s not a huge fan of Islam, but at least it isnā€™t Catholicism, and heā€™s largely ignorant of non-human religions.

  4. What is their attitude towards magic?
Magic can be a wondrous thing of beauty, or a terrifying force plucked from your nightmares.
It all depends on whoā€™s using it, and what theyā€™re using it for.

  5. What is their attitude towards humans/non-humans?
People are people, everybody has the same basic wants and needs. Everyone has motives, goals, hopes, fears and a price. If you can figure those out, then you can move mountains.
That doesnā€™t extend to races most of civilisation puts in the ā€œkill-on-sightā€ category, like orcs and lizard-men, heā€™s not that broad-minded.

  6. What is their attitude to money? How careful are they when spending?
Eoin is careful, and precise with his money. But if spending coin will save the lives, or further the cause of people he cares about he will spread the wealth like a drunken sailor.
