A Roundup of Worldwide Evil

He has been accused of inciting hatred and conspiring to destabilise Nicaragua.

Dozens of influential Nicaraguans have already been detained on similar charges as part of a crackdown on critics of President Daniel Ortega.

Didn’t the US support Ortega in the 1980s? I seem to vaguely remember that.

No, Reagan supported the contras, who are remembered today as either “freedom fighters” or “right wing death squads”.

From the article. That’s the writer on the left and Ortega on the right.

Ronnie and Margaret were not fans of Sandinistas. The Clash, on the other hand…

So it was Manuel Noriega they supported. Okay. Been a while. Thanks, @RAvery too.

Broadcaster CGTN published the correspondence - allegedly written by Ms Peng - online. Written in her voice, it claims she was not missing or unsafe, adding: “I’ve just been resting at home and everything is fine.”

The email also said the sexual assault allegation attributed to her was false.

Ms Peng - a former number one-ranked tennis doubles player - had not been heard from since posting an allegation about former Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli on Chinese social media site Weibo in early November.

She alleged she was “forced” into sexual relations with Mr Zhang - who served as China’s Vice Premier between 2013 and 2018 and was a close ally of President Xi Jinping - in a post that was later taken down. She has not been seen or heard from publicly since.

Former Bronx city councilman Fernando Cabrera also appears in this rogues’ gallery. According to the New York Post , the mayor wants him to work in the Office of Community Mental Health. You may remember that organization from when it was called ThriveNYC, and the only problem with this latest remix of Bill de Blasio’s often-troubled, big-budget, failed nepotism project is that Cabrera isn’t so great on actual community mental health; he notoriously supported the nation of Uganda in 2014 during its “Kill the Gays” campaign, which resulted in policies that instituted long prison sentences for same-sex conduct. In a video made after traveling to Uganda, he said that “godly people are in the government” there, and peddled a lie that the U.S. threatened sanctions against Uganda if it didn’t allow same-sex marriages. Five years later, Cabrera, a pastor in New Life Outreach International, told the Post that while his feelings on abortion and queer love remain unchanged, he “respects the law of the land.” Oh, how holy.

So there are reports of massive explosions in both Kharkiv and Kyiv.

I figured Putin was sabre-rattling to try to shore up domestic support and maybe either win concessions for Luhans’ke, or maybe annex it. Even sending troops there seemed to fit.

I can’t imagine what he expects to win with a general war, especially with an ongoing crisis, and with both sides alert.
