Now I’m thinking of Bonobos doing verb conjugation and getting clipped round the ears for neglecting to use the locative case.

Everyone quotes the Romani ite domum bit, but my high school latin teacher periodically told his class to take a long complicated passage “as read” (meaning, skip it and get on with rest of the Gallic War), so “Growth and Learning” from The meaning of life was recognizable as a parody.

HUMPHREY: Uhh, we’ll take the foreplay as read, if you don’t mind, dear.
HELEN: No, of course not, Humphrey.

Definitely not the Bonobo way.

I can imagine young bonobos creating new slangs just to annoy the older generations.

Where does writing come from, and who can be a writer? Alan Moore answers these questions, and reveals the deeper nature of storytelling, its parallels with magic, and what it takes to create meaningful work.

Another word that was created to promote a new socialist identity was to change the word for cow (‘Kuh’) to Großvieheinheit meaning “large livestock unit.” Communist agricultural planners made this change to show that a socialist cow was different, and something special compared to a capitalist cow.[7]

I just saw this reply. I have to agree. It is, in fact, my middle name, by choice.

On another note, this is interesting.

I would assume that in Yoda’s native language, grammar is structured differently than English, and that if language acquisition follows the same process as in humans, then Grogu will speak like Mando and other humans. Of course, that’s logical, and may not actually happen.

Maybe, but where was Grogu for the first 50 years of his life? And would that have an impact?

True, although at this point, he is preverbal, so I guess he’s about, what, maybe 16 months old in terms of development? Maybe even a bit younger. He’s walking, but not talking. A human child, if raised in one language to that point, but learning a second language exclusively after that, would quickly forget the first language. But Grogu isn’t human. And yeah, we don’t know where he was; was he with his own people, or with humans, or another species?

Or, what George “pray that I won’t edit the existing movies any further” Lucas said.

Not sure if this belongs here or in the Enshitification topic, but Lingonaut can’t launch soon enough as far as I am concerned.

von Ahn says that “Duolingo will remain a company that cares deeply about its employees” and that “this isn’t about replacing Duos with AI.” Instead, he says that the changes are “about removing bottlenecks” so that employees can “focus on creative work and real problems, not repetitive tasks.”

Translation: This is all about replacing Duos with AI. How can we increase our profits if we keep having to pay people?
