I second this going into Enshittification, because AI has been messing up things for this company for a while now. AI voice pronunciation and translation is incorrect a disturbing amount of the time. In an app where students are expected to repeat or type what the characters are saying, that’s a problem that leads to mistakes.

And yet “yes, let’s” seems to be perfectly normal, I think more so than the expanded “yes, let us”.

Being really into Frankenstein while at the same time being Chinese is so funny because every time Lord Byron gets brought up, the way his name is pronounced always makes me think of the word 白人 (bái rén), which translates into “white guy”. Lord White Guy.

About poetry, and languages. And why most of the time you need a poet to redo the poems instead of translate them.

Duolingo strikes again. Started a new week in my league and they changed the promotion/safe/demotion numbers. It used to be 4-5 in the Promotion and Demotion zones, with ten positions in the middle that would remain in place. They must have figured out people weren’t progressing on purpose.

Now, it’s 4 in Promotion, 6 “safe” spots, and 10 in the Demotion zone. Unless they change it back, more people have to fight to stay in the middle. What do they think this is, The Hunger Games?

I’ve noticed this as well. I’ve found it’s much easier to get demoted and harder to get promoted than before. In the past I could ride the middle for weeks with minimal effort.

I’m considering turning off the whole leagues aspect entirely as it’s just not adding any value for me. I haven’t really cared all that much about trying to get into higher ranks for a couple of years now so it’s more of a distraction than anything.

Same. Just looked up how to turn my profile private on the desktop so that goes away in the app. I spent two weeks in the Diamond league once, and felt like that was a stressful waste of time. I’m curious to see if the loss of gamification leads me to practice fewer hours, but after all these years daily study is part of my routine.

What’s interesting is that despite the spelling we can still understand the story. However, that might depend upon the reader. In school, some students struggled with Elizabethan English - in the same way some in church had difficulty with the King James version of the Bible. Since I learned from that version in childhood, more modern translations still sound weird to me. I understand both, but at times it seems like turning poetry into prose - like this:

If you read other English playwrights from the same time, you realize how lucky we are that Shakespeare happened to use a form of London dialect that is closer than most to modern English.
