Alexa is being creepy -- and speaking without being woken

Sounds like a RATT to me. It’ll be interesting to see what comes out of this.

Huh. Interesting?

That’s one word for it, I’m sure.

Come on, it’s been clear where SkyNet is going to come from, ever since Microsoft bought Skype and integrated it with their own messenger service…

Isn’t this proof that Alexa IS woke?

“Awoken” =/= “woke”

Maybe they were just prototyping a new skill and accidentally installed it on a few customer machines.

Maybe. I do note that if one lists out the symptoms:

  • info being pushed without being requested
  • said pushed info being mostly in the form of someone (not the Alexa software) laughing
  • sometimes the pushed info is not what anyone in the household has looked up, specifically a listing of local cemeteries and funeral homes

That all sounds like bored teenagers to me. Someone’s developed (or found) a tool which lets them talk through Alexa’s speaker remotely (the laughing), and probably listen too (which is why they’re laughing).

This sounds like the most plausible explanation I’ve read.

They’re saying that it’s a problem with detection of a skill command.

Makes me glad I don’t have one. The Firestick I have is supposed to have Alexa in it, but that’s turned off most of the time.
