As many of you know, I’m from Detroit, lived in the city or just north of it all my life 'cept for four years in Lexington, KY. I’ve never seen the movie this came from, so I never heard or saw this song being performed. It is very bittersweet to me; the movie was released in 1967, and the setting is 1916.
WARNING: John Davidson singing, white people being rich, usual Disney madness, lots of irony.
This happens to be the last film that Walt was involved with before he died. Mifuckingawd, what would he say about Disney today?
born and raised
On the playground was where I spent most of my days
Chillin’ out maxin’ relaxin’ all cool
And all shootin some b-ball outside of the school…
It’s not our particular heritage (we’re from Central America), but Las Mañanitas was definitely part of my childhood. It’s probably been more than 20 years since I even heard the song, but now it’s an earworm (a sweet one, not an irritating one).
