I follow this Insta account and this is the cutest thing ever.
It was wrong of them to post the video publicly, for all the reasons stated in the article, but Iām still glad thereās proof out there that being compassionate and understanding that a teen/young adult really isnāt in full control of their emotions at all times will resolve a situation faster and better than calling in a SWAT team.
Iām not crying. Youāre crying.
Context for those unfamiliar with Coffeespoonie: sheās a disability rights activist on Twitter who very recently moved out of her parentās house.
Iāve been following her for a while, and sheās a righteous human being!
Boy she looks happy!
She makes such a good point here:
We mock the ādrive-thruā culture and the āhave it deliveredā as laziness, but they are liberating to many disabled people. So many things we as ableds (or ableds in a particular realm) call lazy ā like pre-peeled oranges or pre-cut peppers ā are lifechangers for people who couldnāt have those before. The difference between ordering dinner, depending on someone else to cook, and making your own dinner is huge.
And this is such a problematic area, too.
Purely anecdotal, but my late nephew (the one with epidermolysis bullosa) used to milk the sympathy card, and have people do things for him we figured he could do for himself, until the night his older brother caught him raiding the fridge and making himself a sandwich. We stopped ābabyingā him after that.
On the other hand, we have someone who truly craves her independence, and that she now has it is gratifying.
It totally comes down to ādisabled people are people tooā. That means they have their own preferences and aspirations, but also their own faults and weaknesses.
Iām seeing a bit of both in the post about the drive-through Walgreens. Okay, drive-throughs are better in an environment already dominated by the car. Itās not the only solution even in that environment, though (me, Iād prefer deliveries to be easier for everyone ā just because youāre abled doesnāt mean you can get to a pharmacy easily when theyāre open).
Yessssssss.
Nothing like popping up to the Walgreens at 1:35 to find the pharmacy is closed from 1:30 - 2:00 for the pharmacistās break.
Though, that says more about the working conditions than anything else IMHO
I should probably know who the Be Humane guy is, but I donāt. Iām totally with the others, though, so heās probably a decent sort.
He got killed messing with manta rays, so maybe not humane in the Humane Society way?
I believe itās Paul Walker, who is somewhat problematic. On the one hand, he supported some good causes and gave away a lot of money. On the other hand, thereās considerable evidence he had some really skeevy relationships with underage girls.
Not my choice for a good role model.
So many white people.
Bad news: Had to cash in my life insurance policy.
Good news: Got the check today and the amount was more than Iād expected.
Bad news: I still need a means of income that doesnāt require me to lift more than five pounds.
Good news: The check will cover whatās left of the unpaid 2017 property taxes, as well as my car insurance and my utilities thatāve gone unpaid.
I actually can hear his voice in my head, all these years later.
So today I took my beloved dog to the vet for surgery. Afterward, I wasnāt quite ready to go home yet. Feeling the need for coffee, food, and a little down time, I headed to the nearest coney island for some breakfast. I was still teary-eyed when I sat down, but the Greek omelet, hash browns and toast had me feeling better.
When I was done, I asked for the bill, only to be told it was taken care of. There had to be some mistake, I thought.
There wasnāt. My waitress saw how down I was and decided to pay for my meal. She asked me about it, gave me a little hug, and told me, āMerry Christmas.ā
I thanked her, and left quickly, before I could start crying againā¦ and hopefully before she noticed Iād left the cost of the meal under my plate. I couldnāt let her spend her hard-earned money on meā¦ but her incredible thoughtfulness and kindness is something Iām glad to hold on to (until I can get a chance to pay it forward myself.)
stories like this give me so much hope for the world. thank you for sharing this. : )
Is this a regional term?
