All Things Fitness and Wellness

One thing we don’t have (at least that I’ve been able to find) is a forum to discuss matters of health, fitness, and related concerns. So here we are! Consider this a venue to talk about whatever you’re doing to keep healthy in this trouble times, to discuss recent wellness trends, to squint disgustedly at whatever GOOP has come out with, to watch the latest government health guidance with horror, and so forth. If it has to do with efforts to hang onto this mortal coil, now we have a spot.

Anyway, I made this topic in part because I wanted to talk about what I’ve been doing for my workout. We’re a wide-ranging and diverse group and I figured someone might be interested in this sort of thing, so.

For about five months I’ve been doing this workout from Heroic Sport, which I purchased years ago, but has since been made available for free on the internet. By way of context, I love functional fitness-type workouts, so a routine that included bodyweight, Indian clubs, and kettlebells was right up my alley.

BUT, as you’ll see if you watch the program outline above, the dynamic-load nature of the program involves rolling a 6-sided die up to ten times per workout, which was just too much overhead for my no-executive-function brain. So I put off trying the program for years.

Well eventually I got tired of delaying (and I had just gotten some really nice kettlebells that I was eager to use) so I decided to solve my own problem. I wrote a Google Sheet and a set of scripts that generated workouts at the press of a button. Since it’s a Google Sheet I can also do fun things like log my workouts, determine exercise distribution and trends, take notes, and all that other good stuff that fitness nerds like to do. And it’s great! One thing the sheet does is track how many days (and how many minutes) I’ve been working out in a week, so it helps me stay on track.

If you’ve been thinking of doing some kind of program that has a bit too much overhead, you should consider replacing yourself with a small script and tracking your workouts that way.

Anyway, what else you got?
