A space for remembering the good times of ‘the site that was’ and the community that still ‘is.’
To the denizens of the soon to be former BoingBoing BBS:
First up:
I’m gonna miss the interface and my profile page.
(Over a million posts read ?!?!)
ETA:
I totally forgot about my second account that I used when I was logged on while at work, until someone reminded me today:
Here’s mine.
I never knew I could add a header picture.
I haven’t used it since some time in early 2020.
Here’s mine:
I was never really that active on the BBS until I came out in 2021, preferring to lurk. But I’ve been reading the site since around 2003. A lot has changed since then, and gradually I started being less interested in the articles as they became more about political division than about interesting shit on the internet. The last few years I’ve barely read the blog at all… the interesting part was the BBS (non boing threads mostly).
So I guess when my participation on the site is finally old enough to drink in the US, the site died. I will not be moving over to the Nazi bar.
I’ve… apparently been away long enough that I didn’t even have an active account any more.
Weird how time flies by. Still remember the protests over some of the bans…
I don’t blame you at all.
I already had the long forgotten account, and I got a free sub…
But I hate the interface and setup, though not as much as I hate the fact that such a platform allows and enables bigots and fasscholes. who endanger my friends.
So I will likely only use it to glean content for discussions here;
It’s only fair, after all; that’s how the authors did us for years.
That was the original catalyst for this site.
Thanks for this thread, Melz.
I’ll miss Rob. He was too enigmatic sometimes, but I appreciated his writing style and how much he engaged with us in the comments.
Can’t say I’ll especially miss any other BB posters.
De nada.
Same.
We could choose to invite him, if the community is so inclined.
He already has an account (allegedly), but it hasn’t been active for over 7 years.
ETA: He was the only one to respond on BB when I reached out about our name change and offered the domain as a mea culpa.
Noted; thanks!
Not surprising, that.
I’m going to miss the easy banter in the positive posts, and the found-family space within it.
Still, here we are, without the things that most of us complained about. Onward and upward, fellow Mutants.
Found family is not lost, just moved to a new address. Mostly, anyway. And I am so incredibly grateful for that! You guys have been my anchor through some really rough patches, and I have found that I need that more that I knew I did. Thanks, y’all.
@Melizmatic may I suggest a new topic title?
How about “Olds go nostalgic for the good old days of BB”?
For context:
Damn, I tried so hard for a laugh emoji!
Old habits and all…
(Signed: A Fellow Old!)
BB has been in my RSS feed for eons. Alas, the era has ended.
You may; may I ask why the suggestion?
Did they just call us old!?
Sunday will mark 60 trips 'round the sun for this guy. But “old” is a state of mind. And, right now, with (waves hands frantically) all this, I am feeling every one of them.
To be clear, I have absolutely no issue with the title or content of this thread. I just like symmetry, and thought this fit well with those other two threads. No pressure whatsoever. You do you.
