I’m about halfway through this video… Jawn Lewis just talking to various Black people about their hair (including FD)… Very interesting to hear all these different perspectives on hair and the politics of Black hair care.

So fucking good.

Production design, performances, writing and, most importantly, the incredible music which brings it to life - the scene in the juke joint when Sammie’s music summons the spirits of past and future makes me want to watch the whole thing again just for that. I didn’t expect it to be something of a musical? Here for it though.

Indubitably.

Oh, I wouldn’t call it β€œa musical,” just as I wouldn’t classify it as just a horror flick; the music itself is almost a character in the narrative… as are the elements of horror therein.

that part, right there.
i was blown away by the music and particularly the scene @politeruin described.
also, a scene that will stay with me a long time: the showdown at sunrise between Sammy and evil, when they start doing the lord prayer - so many layers of pain, so strongly performed…
among so many other scenes that will haunt me more than any β€œhorror” flick ever has.
absolutely dumbstruck by the whole thing.

The scene with the lord’s prayer was particularly resonant in its’ message; you can’t fight oppression with the twisted propaganda of your oppressors.

The β€˜horror’ I mentioned previously isn’t just supernatural in nature, it’s existential.

I don’t know whether it was intentional but that scene of the lord’s prayer i also interpreted it as the whole cultural appropriation thing of white people taking music of black origin. Music is definitely an essential part of the whole thing, it’s like all the story is in service to it and i did not expect to be watching an Irish folk dance two thirds of the way through. Awesome.

ETA: Just read this interesting article about the Irish connection.

Abso-fucking-lutely; infiltration and appropriation are core themes of the film.

he did say to Sammy, β€œI want all your stories, all your songs, forever!”
yes, that was appropriation spelled out for what it was, and is.

eta: so many threads and layers to this story, it will be something i think about for a long time. mum and i went to see it yesterday, and have not stopped talking about it all day. fucking fantastic!

I bet we’re gonna get a whole wave of white karens grifting their way to easy street now… Fucking assholes.

At least they’re only taking money from each other. Small mercies.

True… still, I can envision a wave of grifting Karens on the horizon… harass a POC, and win bigly.

You hear that everyone? If you scream racial slurs at children you can become wealthy and TikTok famous!

Hopefully not wealthy enough to survive becoming unemployable, Internet infamous, and shunned. :crossed_fingers:t5:

My husband has been following this… apparently there is a counter-fund raiser, which will raise money for moving in immigrants (specifically from parts of Africa) into housing around her where ever she goes. It includes funds for a PI to keep tabs on her location…

I hope said immigrants understand what they are volunteering for!

I figure that they can community build around her…
