BoingBoing move to substack

It’s basically asking them to delete your account. It gets changed to anon and you no longer have access. I can still read, but tracking and everything is turned off. Though it’ll be a moot point at the end of the week anyway. There are only a couple threads I’d want to read before it goes read-only so I’ll just do it anon.

Is there a jokes thread here already, like the one I had going at bbs? I found one on Mathematical Jokes, but that topic seems limited.

I’d like to replicate some other threads, but don’t want to replicate any that are already here

Oh, and anyone know if there’s a thread, like say Elsewhere Doings or something, for such questions?

There’s “Random Silly Grins.”

Ah, thanks. I’ve even posted there!

Looks like a combination of what was “Jokes” and “Unicorn Chasers” at bbs, but that’s awrite.

There’s a UC thread here.

Just been there. It’s a proper bloody doom-scroll now.

Sadness abounds.

On the bright side, Look Where We Are Now!

I’m going to anonymise later today, in case I need to disappear from TERF Island in the future. I know MI5 already has information on me, but I don’t see why I should make it easy for the rank and file fascists.

Which doesn’t mean much from this side of the pond, but we will do all we can.

From Mark Frauenfelder at the old place…:

Hi all,

We chose Substack because it provides the best available publishing tools to create the Boing Boing experience we’ve always wanted to deliver. After years of wrestling with aggressive advertising and technical limitations, we finally have a platform that lets us focus on what matters most - creating and sharing the content you love.

Our direct experience with the Substack team has been overwhelmingly positive. They’ve given us complete editorial independence and the technical support we need. We maintain full control over our space and actively moderate our community to ensure it remains the safe, weird, wonderful place you expect Boing Boing to be.

We understand some readers have concerns about Substack’s platform policies. We’ve thought carefully about this. Our presence here isn’t an endorsement of every voice on the platform - just as our presence on Twitter/X, YouTube, or any other platform hasn’t been. We’re here because these tools let us build something better for our community.

Our mission remains clear: to keep the wonder and weirdness of Boing Boing alive for happy mutants today and into the future. We believe this move helps us achieve that mission while creating a more sustainable future for independent publishing.

Yep. Pretty much.

It seems that people still assume we can’t read marketing speech for the complete bullshit it is.

Crazy isn’t it? I think of our community as one of the savvier ones, frankly, and you’d think that the folks there would be aware… but I guess they don’t pay us much attention (or Mark doesn’t) or that they just don’t give a shit, and as long as they cover their asses with marketing-speak, it’ll be just fine!

I could break that statement down, sentence by sentence, and explain how it is wrong at each step and why it matters. I could mock it. I could parody it.

But I won’t. I won’t waste my time on someone trying to cover their ass the minute after they took a dump on a diverse, well-loved community because it makes their life easier.
