When I think about pronunciation I think nuck-m-l.
The handle came from Naperville Upscale Kitchen Equipment, Made Local, and I used those initials for my email. When I joined boingboing it didn’t seem to like underscore separators so it was all jammed together. A rather silly origin story, but when I joined BBS years ago I hardly was thinking about longevity.
Um, I must be missing something, sorry. Isn’t that exactly what anonymization does?
That is exactly what I thought as well. Strange that we both got that impression since there is no direct evidence
If they reopen the BBS and we return to it, I would not mind to open just a new account and my usual “close to my name but not my name” handle, so I don’t mind being anonymized. I’m not someone who would cry over losing the badges of honor.
On the other hand… if they reopen the BBS… would you again put the hand on the mouth that bit you? Will they be assurances of this not happening in the future (ie: community governance, self-financing, in effect becoming part of BB but not BB?)
Thank you for the information. I find it more comfortable in day mode.
I always thought it meant Medium Large
That’s a great origin story.
Finally got to the end of the thread.
Great to see so many of you here, thanks to @MerelyGifted for extending an invitation to me.
I tried the substack version the last couple days and it is no substitute for the BBS. Unwieldy and unfriendly at best, combined with the nazi neighbours, I probably won’t be giving it the extended trial I had initially planned on.
Sad to see it go this way but happy to find this place. This feels more like BBS than BB’s new digs.
Interesting. I read it as “Nuke 'em all,” grim but understandable given (waves hands wildly)
Anything ending in “ML” in my world is usually “Markup Language”. Given your interest and apparent experience in nuclear power…
Let’s just say I would never have guessed the origin story on that one.
@Heikki re. BBS subs… I clicked “sure, I’m in” without really thinking about it. The reality of the change took another 30 seconds to sink in.
I can honestly say I never would have guessed that.
… Step 3: Profit!
Step 4. Probably.
If I were to go back, I’d abandon the AnnaTheWeird name and go with what I use here. IF I were to go back. I’m not sure I want to put my eggs back in that basket anymore, they clearly don’t care for the commentariat there.
I just requested anonymization Over There. A bit painful, but less than I expected. Being here again really helped ease that pain.
Here’s a useless nerdly fun-fact: make a bookmark link to this page and it includes some sense of where along the long and growing scroll it was marked (that is, somewhere in the middle); and this is stored in the final integer in the URL. So https…/4752/511 and you end up in the middle, https…/4752/1573 and you end up farther down; and https…/4752/9999999 and it (recalculates?) and places you at the current rapidly growing tail. (no no… no need to thank me [wink])
I’ve been anonymized since Tuesday morning. As soon as they announced it I knew the party was over, and having already established myself here (if mainly as an infrequent visitor) I just transitioned right over here full-time.
The only toe I’ve kept in the old BBS is to watch the announcement thread anonymously because everyone needs a little rubber-necking at a wreck every now and then.
Heh, me too. I’ve read that whole, sad thing! Interesting also to see some showing their true colors there (such as complaints that BB’s commentariat enforced an “echo chamber” – what a tell!)
Rolled my eyes at one of the “far left” comments. Left of the Democratic Party ain’t far left.
If there was any point to it, I would mute them.
Yeah, some of those guys are just pissed they met resistance to their toxic ideas and dismiss it as the community being an echo chamber instead even considering maybe their ideas aren’t worth that much.
