That name sounds familiar.

Yes. It would have been one of those two. Cannot remember which.

The "Rejoiceā€¦ " thread on Boing is turning into a Fuck You thread, and thereā€™s three more days to go!

Some real harsh but fair comments.

People are disappointed.

Not sure Iā€™m down with the personal attacks on HFB, although I do share some of the opinions expressed. It feels wrong, IYKWIM.

I get the need to vent. Slagging off a person by name, nah. Not cool.

I think itā€™s a stupid and selfish decision. Iā€™d rather move on than vainly attempt to hurt Jason, though. That does seem petty and pointless.

My only fear is if negative feedback gets them to nuke the place early.

I long ago noticed that all the best guests hang out in the kitchen during parties. So good to see U!

Fishing for thoughts on anonymizing Back Thereā€¦

Iā€™m tempted against doing it because 1) I can imagine trying to find something I posted there, and simply searching my user name would make that easier, and 2) Ken has written that if SuS doesnā€™t work out, itā€™s possible (though granted, very unlikely) that the lights about to go out at BB will be turned back on.

So yeah, whatā€™s the reasoning for anonymizing at this point? Sorry if Iā€™m missing some obvious reasons.

@MerelyGifted, Jason was dubbed Happy Fun Ball at some point, I think because heā€™s so tetchy and dangerously cavalier with commenters. (Do not taunt!)

Thank you, dawling!

My old account has my name. I donā€™t want it attached to comments and articles for fascists to read.

If Boing Boing ā€œcame backā€ I think it would be an empty shell anyway. Lots of people are simply walking away.

Me, I just donā€™t want to be tracked by people who wish me harm.

Just got logged out over there. Guess they got around to my anonymization request. So long, old friend. We had a good 21 odd years together.

Yeah.

Not sure just when I started, I think it was about 18 years ago.

Hi all. Just checking to see that my account here is still active. As I said in Kvetch, Iā€™ll likely be taking a break from Internet forums in general, but Iā€™m grateful that I can continue keeping in touch with the best of the BB community here.

The longer version (taken from the old welcome messageā€¦

Once upon a time on BoingBoingā€¦

ā€¦there were special rooms for users in good standing called ā€œRegulars Lounges.ā€ If you had been around long enough and gained a certain trust level from the system you were allowed to access and create your own threads, available only to other trusted Regulars.

Two of the most popular Lounges were ā€œKvetching About the Usual Trollsā€ and ā€œHey Rubeā€ (Kvetch and Rube for short). Kvetch was for discussion of the handful of persistent trolls clever enough to stay within the siteā€™s rules. Rube was for identifying and discussing potential new ones. Both Lounges served the useful purpose of allowing these discussions without derailing threads on the main site with personal disputes.

Unfortunately, the site admins removed the Members Lounge functionality in April 2017, and with it Kvetch and Rube. The Regulars, being an ornery bunch, would not stand for that and within days had re-created them in secret using the Direct Message functionality. We call these the ā€œPseudo-Lounges.ā€

While some of the BB authors and mods eventually became aware of the Pseudo-Lounges and allowed them to remain, they have asked us to be discreet and careful about who we invite to join them, lest we upset those on the public BBS who celebrated the demise of the Regulars Lounges. We also abide by the public siteā€™s conduct guidelines as much as we can as well as by our own rules.

Melz in particular was instrumental in setting them up. It was great while it lasted. Iā€™m still amazed they ran as long as they did behind the walls and officially unsanctioned-- almost 8 years!

How do you anonymize yourself over there? Is there a menu option, or do you send a message to them?
