Wtiches be flyināā¦
I took this Wednesday night ā Halloween Eve.
It was just a practice picture, to see how well I could work with extreme highlights and shadows. But it turned out looking very ominous.
Just brilliant!
The one right above, too, also!
Are these your pics? A, maybe the wienermobile drove past my house a couple years ago, not decked out for Halloween.
Nah, no such luck. Found 'em online; looks like I got them last September.
A walk up to the nearby gas station was beautifully timed a few years ago. The Wienermobile who lives at the the henry ford Museum was heading up Grand River. Weād met several times, and I knew what the modren ones look like, so I immediately recognized it. Thatās the only time Iāve seen one in the wild.
Neat! Didnāt know thereās one at HF, probably because Iāve neglected to visit all these years. No clue if it was our local variant or not, but certainly odd to find it on my random street.
Another well-timed walk to buy smokes, I saw a fantastic old Rolls-Royce heading up Grand River
The absolute best tho was when an ambulance was going up Grand River, blasting Itās Tricky by Run-DMC out its external speakers! Everyone at the gas station stopped and gawked, and the chap on the passenger side waved, w/a massive grin.
I mean, it really was perfect. Thereās no way theyādāve got in trouble: no one wouldāve believed it.
ETA:
Iām disappointed in myself for having been too shocked to start dancing.
This is the one who lives at the museum -
ETA:
It was born in 1952.
I was going to post something like this last week at the BBBS but then STUFF HAPPENED. I thought it was too late and just fuck it, but then I thought āwhat day is scarier than Halloween? ELECTION DAY!ā I donāt know about you mutants, but I started drinking at 6:30 AM! So here is my poorly thought out
TOP TEN HORROR MOVIES OF 2024 FOR HALLOWEEN I MEAN ELECTION DAY THAT I HAVE ACTUALLY WATCHED
Honorable mentions so you donāt say āwhat about [X]?ā:
Alien Remix I Mean Romulus - A total blast, apart from that stupid call back line. I rank the franchise 1-Alien 2-Aliens 3- TIE Alien Resurrection & Romulus. It is strange that they skipped a third movie and went straight into the far-future 4th story with Resurrection - I guess a film about how Ripley and Hicks and Bishop lived happily together on Earth and helped Newt overcome her trauma wasnāt exciting enough? Oh well Iām sure thatās what happened! Too bad no other Alien movies were made until this new one! Apart from some sketchy physics (and I donāt mean the gravity purge nonsense, I mean how did she go into the cryopod drawer headfirst and then also come out headfirst?) I loved it. The human-alien creature at the end was amazing, but I count it as too sci-fi to be on a āhorrorā list.
Lisa Frankenstein - loved it, especially the āI have The Cureā scene, but itās horror-comedy, not scary. Great soundtrack though!
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice - horror comedy not scary, had some moments, but Tim Burtonās last good movie is still Sleepy Hollow. Give it up, Tim!
Chime - at 45 mins itās more of a short film, so I left it out. Highly recommended though.
THE ACTUAL RANKING:
10 - Late Night with the Devil
I donāt understand the hype and praise for this movie. It was ok. It was like a long episode of Tales from the Darkside, which I am cool with, but it was way over rated.
9 - Abigail
Fun stupid movie, not scary, the setup makes no sense in retrospect except to have a twist that is spoiled in the advertising anyway. Dan the man Stevens is awesome as always. Popcorn movie.
8 - New Life
I really liked this one. Go in blind. Not particularly scary, but well done and thought provoking.
7 - I Saw the TV Glow
This is where you realize I value mood and vibe over shocks and gore. I really liked this one, even though itās not scary at all. Neurodivergent lead character, evocative production design, nice direction and cinematography. I loved the clips from the show, and especially the clips from when he watched it years later and it was cheesy kiddy fare. I look forward to the directorās future stuff.
6 - Strange Darling
This one is divisive, as in I am divided on it. Fantastic direction and cinematography, great script and acting, but the central twist is so unrealistic it makes my feminist and anti-cop nose twitch. Still, definitely a ride.
5 - MaXXXine
Not horror per se but a Giallo homage/pastiche, which, cool! Itās a total blast. You donāt have to have seen the previous films X and Pearl, but you should. Mia Goth is FUCKING AWESOME.
4 - Oddity
This is like a long, well done Tails From the Crypt. Iām not usually susceptible to jump scares, but holy crap thereās one in this movie that got me! Multiple murders and ghosts not withstanding, I want to live in that fucking house.
3 - Longlegs
The mood, the vibe, the dread, fucking loved it! Another neurodivergent lead character, or perhaps sheās just deeply traumatized. Direction and cinematography are astounding. Nerdy guy from Legally Blond is a helluva filmmaker! If you havenāt seen The Blackcoatās Daughter and I Am the Pretty Thing that Lives in the House fix that mistake forthwith!
2 - Cuckoo
I havenāt seen Rez the directorās first feature but Iām going to as soon as possible. This movie is fantastic. Hunter and Dan the man are incredible (I think Dan Stevens is my favorite actor and I love that he does all these crazy genre films). The direction and cinematography are amazing. The mood, the vibe, itās a scary trip you wanna take.
1 - The Substance
Hands down, the best movie of the year so far! I was a fan of her first film Revenge - WATCH IT! - and this takes the style, the violence, the gore, and the verve of that movie and cranks it to ELEVEN! It is not subtle. It is brilliant. WATCH IT!
Not on the list? I havenāt seen it. Donāt care about Quiet Place sequels. Donāt care about religious horror like Immaculate or The First Omen. Didnāt like Smile so not gonna watch the sequel, same with the Terrifier crap. Speak No Evil is a US remake of a fantastically disturbing movie I have no real desire to experience again. Maybe one day. Havenāt seen The Heretic yet but definitely on my list.
Anyway, go vote, unless you really want The Purge and The Handmaidās Tale (and Idiocracy) to be for reals, you horror nut!
Peace!
After Halloween my family wore our costumes to the local car museum that had a certain Mercedes on display.
May the upside of the Schwartz always be with you!
