Climate change and climate justice

Perhaps, in part, his actions to vilify FEMA are meant to eventually privatize FEMA’s mission, something that could put many millions of dollars into his own pockets via (at the very least) kickbacks. Right out the chute into his second term, he’s been working on taking down guardrails to corruption, a prelude to kleptocracy.

A revolution in heat pump technology;

I have had a heat pump for a few years now; this is my 4th winter, and I’m really happy with it. It works down to -25 C (-13 F), and we haven’t gotten that low in Toronto in that time, so mine works fin in my area, but this new one will work well in places much further north, and will be even more efficient and have a longer lifespan than current models.

ETA; the commenters on the article at CleanTechnica are dubious about the claims, and they are a knowledgeable bunch, so I guess we’ll see if the company’s claims pan out.

Sorry, I’m a visual guy. On second thought, maybe this was a bad idea.

The warmer years are usually the El Nino years, with La Nina being cooler. But this, all-time record, was La Nina. Just let that sink in a moment.

This very low winter extent doesn’t necessarily mean the Arctic will end up with record conditions throughout 2025, as conditions can change quickly at the poles.

But, with the Arctic warming nearly four times faster than the global average, declines over the coming decades are almost inevitable.

Are you doing okay?

Bom dia.

I’m fine, thanks. I’m a little uncomfortable because of the excessive heat and humidity in the air, but I’m lucky because I can use the subway to commute and my office has air conditioning units in satisfactory condition. But the situation in the rest of the city is very complicated. The water company in the metropolitan region of Rio is not the best and had to make many emergency repairs to its residential supply network. Because of this, 37 neighborhoods were without access to drinking water for about 3 days.

I read that around 2,400 people, mostly children and the elderly, have had to be treated in public hospitals since the beginning of the month. The newspaper article said that around 60% of cases treated in Ruio’s hospitals were people with skin burns due to long exposure to the sun. Another common symptom is dehydration.

I drink a lot of water all day long and try to take as many showers I can. I dream of a cold front from Antartica.

Good to know that you are doing okay. Meanwhile, we are buried in snow and it’s -13 here today (8.6 F for the Americans). The lack of clean drinking water is a real concern.

I have a heat pump for both heating and cooling, and they are more efficient at both than conventional heating and cooling systems. They are an old tech in places like Hong Kong, for the cooling aspect, and are gaining popularity in North America and Europe. I assume you have them available in Brazil as well, and if you have the opportunity to install one, I recommend it.

I had to look up what a heat pump was. I saw the prices and it’s out of my budget. I have been making do with an air conditioning unit in my room.

These sub-zero temperatures are inconceivable to me. The most intense cold I’ve ever faced was 7o once when I was traveling through the mountains of Rio. It felt like I was in the middle of Siberia.

They are not cheap to install, but cheap to run. My heating costs would be somewhere from $1600.00 to $2000.00 Canadian dollars over most cool and cold seasons (6 months), but heating is costing me about $450.00 a year. But yes, the upfront cost can be daunting. Canada was offering grants to install them, which brought it down to what would have cost me to install a heating and a/c system.

Our temps swing wildly over the year and I’m in a fairly temperate part of Canada, but we can go from say, -20 C in winter, with a wind chill of -35 C to 32 C with a humidex of 40 C. I remember one summer we were saying goodbye to a researcher from India and it was hotter in Toronto than it was in New Delhi, where he was headed.

NHC does great work, never better and never more needed, so the goddamn administration will burn it to the ground.
