If he was asking irish people if they knew about AMOC then he should have expected blank stares. But if he mentioned the Gulf Stream current instead he would have received a positive response

Seconded. I’ve been regularly following climate change news for a few decades, and I would’ve guessed AMOC was an '80s era car or something.
The Gulf Stream, however, is one I know pretty well.

Unfortunately the gulf is American now, and their leader won’t approve of his brand being used to discuss anything climate change related.
