Congressional News and Discussion

You know, that seems like a good measure of how bad things are. The struggle doesn’t actually end…but at a certain point it stops being about even saving our children and starts being about a better world for grandchildren. :disappointed:

I will not be directly impacted by this (i hope) but seeing the final vote i still felt a sickening lurch in the pit of my stomach thinking what it’s going to do to millions of people. I’m so sorry these ghouls are shredding your democracy.

I will not be directly affected, as I am an old straight cis white dude with a pretty good income and money in the bank. But my patients are largely immigrants, over 60% Medicaid, many with mental health concerns, and all needing vaccines. I am looking around at my colleagues and thinking that this will seriously affect some retirement planning for a good number of us. And I know no one who makes enough money to actually benefit from this shitshow. I am gonna spend the 4th in my garden and my woodshop, with living things and making beautiful things. Lord knows, this mess will still be here next week when I come back…

I don’t think people understand the true reality of this bill. It’s not just about the bits and pieces - while recognizing the individuals and communities who will be directly crushed by this - the whole of this bill will crash the US economy and probably take the global economy with it.

You simply can’t kick tens of millions of people off healthcare (then tens of millions more when the Medicare cuts from smacking into the debt ceiling kick in), tens of millions off of food stamps, and increase costs for the working class to give tax breaks to billionaires without crumbling the entire foundation of a society.

That line about how $150B budget for ICE means “ICE is now the third-largest military in the world” sounded like hyperbole, so I looked it up.

Holy shit.

Yes, it turns out that it’s the number for over 10 years, so it’s really closer to like 38B a year, which is still a terrifying number.

But at least they aren’t on the budget for very long…

Thanks. That’s still bad, but not as bad.

“I got my lifetime free Cadillac level insurance, a government pension (unlike the tens of thousands of government workers DOGE broomed), a really high paying consultant job, and Fox news paid appearances all set up, so happy to leave now that I have voted as required by my Lord and Master, DJT. I will now retire and occasionally mention how I wish I could have done something. Be sure to buy my book!”
