Mike Johnson: ā€œLook, I’ve been a little busy on reconciliation, so I’m not following all the twists and turns of the Qatar jet. My understanding is it’s not a personal gift to the president … other nations give us gifts all the time … it’s not my lane.ā€

So he’s resigned the Speakership? Because it’s Congress that approves gifts, he’s nominally the Speaker of the House; if it’s not his lane then he must have resigned.

If Sen. Lee gets his way and bans porn nationally, what will Speaker Johnson and his son have to talk about?

Congresspeople and their families will be exempt from the enforcement, as per norm.

Sneaky. Got this from a financial institution’s current articles. Lots of ways in which the new proposed Tax Bill claims to be helping average families but in fact is codifying higher in-pocket savings for the wealthiest tax payers, but this one little section sounds so reasonable that it’ll probably be passed, putting MAGA on the books:

Savings Accounts for Minors

A new concept in the bill is the ā€œmoney account for growth and advancementā€ provision, or MAGA accounts. This allows taxpayers to contribute up to $5,000 per year to a trust account for a minor. The assets are not taxed while they remain in the account. Distributions for qualified purposes (education, purchasing a primary residence, or paying back an SBA loan) are taxed upon withdrawal at capital gains rates for amounts in excess of basis. The bill also contains a pilot program where parents of children born between 2025 and 2029 can receive a refundable credit from the Treasury department for $1,000 per child deposited directly into a MAGA account for that child.

How many families have an extra $5K per child to drop into an account like this every year? But it sure looks nice, doesn’t it? And, an extra reward for those who have babies specifically in this Administration’s time period and can afford to silo at least $1K.

Yeah, I don’t know many families that can swing that, year after year, even in my middle-class bubble. And it is also a worse deal than the 529 plans that most states offer for education, which are tax-free going in AND out. This would complete with those plans and probably weaken their investment power.

I suppose that’s a step up from ping pong paddles with words on them.

I look at anything like this (because this will send the ketchup flying) as a d100 roll with a 1% chance of acute myocardial infarction or 2% chance of cerebrovascular accident. It’s low percentage, but if you roll enough times, you’ll eventually get the number you need.

What’s next, skywriting? I’m imagining ā€œSurrender Donaldā€¦ā€

The way that they filmed that effect for the movie was super cool. They had a glass-bottomed table covered in a layer of milky liquid with a camera pointing up at it. Then they used a syringe of black liquid to spell out the ā€œsmokeā€ letters from above. Ingenious!

I’m surprised that the secret service would allow it. At least while Donnie is there.

They usually close the airspace when he’s somewhere.

Presumably with the cooperation of the erstwhile FAA, so he might’ve hoisted himself with his own petard.

Honestly, there are a lot of things that are more illegal than genocide. International law doesn’t tend to be very robust after all
