Make it so.
So long as nobody mentions “up the long ladder” today I’ll continue to monitor and enjoy today’s silliness

New ‘Star Trek’ Series Gets Unexpected Update From Jonathan Frakes: “I Hope That Wasn’t an Overshare”
https://movieweb.com/star-trek-starfleet-academy-update-jonathan-frakes/
So I’m going to be having some decent downtime in a month or so and I’d really like to catch up on “recent” trek. I’ve watched all the classic stuff, and finally saw DS9 during the pandemic lockdown and understood why it gets all the acclaim.
I’ve watched Enterprise, but I can’t say I really enjoyed it. The Section 31 stuff was enjoyable but it really seemed like the writing was all over the place.
So what I’m missing are the following. Any recommendations on watch order and/or “skip it”?
- Picard (heard this is basically a rough first season and then ok to good)
- Discovery
- Lower Decks (seems like a comedy animated Trek?)
- Prodigy
- Short Treks (only found this by looking at the wiki)
- Strange New Worlds
If it helps with suggestions, of the Treks I enjoyed TNG and Voyager the most, followed closely by DS9 for the character building alone. Voyager made me laugh with it’s self-violating premise, sheer “throw this issue at the wall” randomness, and monster of the week format that made it feel like a rotating fan author update of TOS for me.
Does this imply that the All-Union Leninist Young Communist League had tricorders before everybody else, or what am I looking at?
I’ve only seen clips of some of the shows, but speaking as someone who grew up with Kirk, Spock and McCoy, Discovery doesn’t feel like Star Trek at all, but it looked like trashy fun, if you set aside that it’s supposed to be Star Trek. Strange New Worlds seems the most like the original in tone; some serious episodes, some silly fun ones, and it seems very entertaining.
Picard is TNG fan service. And lots of it. (It was a fun watch for this TNG fan.)
I’ve enjoyed Disco, but haven’t seen 5 yet, we’ll probably drop Netflix soon and pick Paramount back up.
Lower Decks is hilarious, totally worth watching. There’s a reason fans have saved it. Twice.
Strange New Worlds is pretty good, like TNG without the awkward first 2 seasons.
Haven’t seen the rest on your list, but I hope this helps.
