Let me guess: one of those with impossibly long titles, which has a reincarnator with an absurdly cheat skill, and we read for confort and lulz, but has the equivalent nutritional value of a poptart?

(the image is familiar, pretty sure I am also reading it too! )

Somewhat of a long title, but not egregious like some other ones i’ve seen:

Isekai Mokushiroku Mynoghra: Hametsu no Bunmei de Hajimeru Sekai Seifuku

Should translate to: Apocalypse Bringer Mynoghra: World Conquest Starts with the Civilization of Ruin

I read it here. My review of what has been translated so far is that it is an interesting take of the isekai genre but it is fairly dark, perhaps veering on the side of perhaps being too cruel to the characters as a means to propel the story forward. I’m kind of on the fence on how i feel about it.

yeah, there are a lot of tropes and subtropes of the isekai genre i don’t specially like: the fucking mania of putting slaves everywhere, and the bordering the rape “vengeance” genre stories…

Usually I prefer comedies like “Isekai Ojiisan” (the story of a man who is teleported to the other world and manages to return… and is a complete geek), or “serious” fantasy like “Henkyou no Roukishi: Bard Roehn”, TBH

ETA: With the obsession the writers have with slavery, I’m starting to think japanese have a much different definition of slaves that we have.

Does that make The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant isekai?

So far the one i mentioned doesn’t have any of the slave nonsense (kind of, one character that briefly shows up does have a girl slave but i think that was meant as a meta commentary on that trope because he was also an MC that was isekai’d). And there’s no rape as far as i know, but the other dark stuff that is there is pretty grim. Normally this isn’t the kind of material i’m interested in, but the meta nature of the story is juuuuust interesting enough to make me want to see where things are going.

OHHHH BOY YOU OPENED A CAN OF WORMS!

Last time I had a debate about what was isekai and wasn’t on my “book club”, we spent like… 5 HOURS.

Apparently I’ve been reading it for a while, and not realized it. Yeah, is the one that he reincarnates into a sort of strategy game as an evil faction, but he’s not exactly evil. That one is not bad.
