ok, is morning, service seems more or less restored (still some issues with public transportation - trains need a lot of juice to work).

There was not much unsafeness: some people got trapped in the subway or elevators had to be rescued, but mostly and thanks to the good weather, most people just reacted like they got the evening free and chilled out in terraces or just went for a walk.

There was a great moment of self-realisation on how much we do depend on internet to do things: I was unable to use public transport because my transport card was expired, but I could not renew it because ticket expenders did not work; i haven’t used paper money in months and I did not took my reserve, so I could not do almost anything (like taking a cab, eating a meal in a bar). A friend needed to find where to take the bus to his hometown, we could not for the love of god find how; there were no info quiosks (unless you knew the bus station, which we had no way to), policemen did not knew either, and obviously internet did not work. I invited him to chill out at my home (a brisk 40 minute walk) until he was able to contact his girlfriend who has a car. I needed to print the lyrics for a song I’m practicing but was not able because my data is either on Google Drive or my personal Datacenter, both of which require power and internet to work. And my printer won’t work without power either

Eventually internet came back (12 hours later) as well as the power grid (14 hours later). I spent the evening chilling out with my friend, reading and playing the Hurdy Gurdy.

I woke up today with a bit of sunstroke (too much walking under the sun, not enough protection) but that’s all.

Thinking of buying a bigger UPS for my computers, or maybe a 3KWh battery reserve for my home, as well as a couple LoRA devices (and candles!) seems we have this kind of think every first of summer, though last year was only a couple hours.

Reminds me that i need to get candles. We have one of two scented ones but not really want you want to use if there’s a power outage. I do have a large power bank that you can recharge with a hand crank or with a solar panel built into it.

We have cheap-ass battery-powered Christmas “candles” who have proven V useful during outages; same w/the wax-covered ones a friend gave us. Best to remove the batteries afterwards, unless they’re in regular or constant use.

We had some expensive smokeless/dripless Japanese temple candles - a Nicheren Buddhist friend gave 'em to me. They were really pretty, deeply fluted tapers, and lasted a loooong time. The best I’ve ever had.

That made dig this out from storage. It has a radio, power bank, torch and a crank. I might buy one with a solar panel too…
