I would love to learn to be at least semi-proficient in some sort of instrument.

Find a local community. That’s what I did; I don’t like socializing that much, and not doing anything always is the easiest route. Having a community gently prodding you to do things helps a lot into doing at least the bare minimum.
Bonus points if they are penguins.

A friend of the family gave me a cassette tape containing a capella music and I found extremely funny their rendition of Zombie Jamboree. A couple decades later I discovered the cassete tape was the soundtrack of “Spike&Co: Do it a Capella” and discovered these guys where actually named “Rockapella”.
I think that cassete and specifically Rockapella is the reason I kept singing
