I recently watched the PBS show “Lucy Worsley Investigates” about Jack the Ripper – she’s a historian, and does a decent job deep-diving into the British history we all think we know but really don’t – and she uncovered that referring to women as “prostitutes” at the time didn’t necessarily mean they were sex workers at all, just unmarried women down on their luck economically.
So we don’t know that he actually targeted sex workers; they may have just been women who were easy targets because they didn’t have a safe home to be in at night.
