Yeah, unless the 's trading partners get pissed off enough to put export levies on the rest of the resources and import duties on the products.
That worked for last time, which is why T—p spits tacks when he hears the name “Christia Freeland”. The highly specific taxes blocking imports of signature items, the sort of things that are the pride of red states, is perceived to have worked well.
(Somehow, if we couldn’t import Apple products, I think we would get over it.)
To be fair, most republicans don’t give a shit about our “national interests” since they are far more concerned with their own interests… as long as they can get rich and hurt people they personally hate, they don’t give a shit what happens to america or her people.
Yup, which is why it was vital we had gotten control of the House, if not kept the Senate.
Despite this, your average uneducated GOP voter isn’t going to understand that it isn’t Biden, Obama, and Clinton’s (either of them) fault. Because the Department of Truth (Fox) will say a lie, face no consequences for it, and it will just be so.
You know, I used to think calls for launching this undocumented immigrant into the heart of the sun were maybe a bit too harsh. Today, I personally want to launch this bastard into the heart of the sun in one of his own rockets.
The EU did that as well and it didn’t have much effect. In a way, targeting red states means targeting those that are so delusional they will vote for him despite losing their export-dependent job. (Of course there are non-crazies in red states, but they don’t vote for him anyway, thus tariffs don’t change their vote either)
As a Californian I thought this conversation was interesting:
There are some hard truths discussed. California is a great place to live (if you can afford it) but certainly has its share of problems too, even if it isn’t the hell hole portrayed on Fox News. Our government has had a Democratic trifecta running the state for the last 13 years, so Republican obstructionism isn’t the main obstacle to solving our problems right now. And if we don’t figure out how to do better that creates an opening for Republicans who may be able to convince a critical mass of people that they have all the easy answers. The state shifted about 12 percentage points towards Trump between 2020 and 2024, which is one hell of a wake-up call.
Right? When he says he wants to cut government funding and strengthen the military (despite the military being the biggest source of government funding), and then appoints two billionaires to find ways to cut government funding (while leaving the military untouched), what do you think will happen?
When the only way to cut government funding (without harming the woefully underfunded military) all that’s left is to clip away at the margins. That’s how you lose things that in the grand scheme of things barely make a dent in the trillions of dollars spent total, but are now considered “wasteful”.
