ok, but i’ll do a hash job of it. (there’s no ‘cross-post’ button?)
Fuck that shit.
Except for the point about Ukrainians and humanitarians, what I’m missing in this list, and in most opinion pieces so far, is any sort of care for the rest of the world. We’re all fucked by this and I would like to see a bit of acknowledgement that America is about to turn on its allies yet again.
(Not directed at you, of course, nor really at the list writer, just a general point informed by having had, with Richard Grenell, a US ambassador last time around who openly supported the AfD in Germany)
No worries! It’s all good!
I’m sorry, I think lots of us are aware of this, even us stupid Americans… No one is ignoring that at all, but you know some people here are literally going to have to leave the fucking country or risk serious violence. Sorry if people’s PERSONAL safety at this time trumps discussions of geopolitics. Selfish, I know.
Geopolitics are about personal safety as well. That of foreigners, of course, but still personal safety. A lot of people are going to die outside the US.
NO ONE IS IGNORING THAT… It’s not an either/or.
If you want to talk about that, DO SO, but don’t pretend like we shouldn’t also talk about who is in danger here in the US… we matter too.
My point was that people are ignoring that and that, exactly, it’s not an either/or. Not here, but in the media at large. And I would not have brought that up in the survival strategies thread, because it doesn’t belong there. But in the election thread, where we’re discussing the fallout from the election, I think it’s a legitimate point to make.
But I understand that everyone is looking at those around themselves right now, as they should. Put the mask on yourself before helping others, and all that.
Then bring it up! No one is stopping you from talking about it. Did someone say we can’t discuss geopolitical implications of this election? Did someone say “fuck the rest of the world, I’m scared”? I didn’t see any of that. I did see a perfectly understandable reaction from people who are vulnerable.
Just… bring it up and we can talk about it! No one is saying you can’t!
I sure would hate to let the NYT speak for me so I’ll tell you this: I am a USian who very much is also worried about the global ramifications. They will impact our economy too, they will impact how people I love are perceived, they will impact the lives of friends, and though somehow people imagine they won’t, they may even result in a war with the US at some point.
Not enough people are talking about how this will impact the climate either.
It’s not that the ones who are the most terrified and vulnerable are less important or shouldn’t be a priority. In reality US news over here is busy blaming women and minorities and young men for the CEOs of US News companies getting exactly what they wanted.
People are being fed a gavage of abuse no matter what online, mainstream media, wherever…they have been for months and now it’s cranked to 11.
Beatings will continue until morale improves.
But you’re not wrong that the US media is totally ignoring the global ramifications compared to other topics. They’re doing so even if by accident by speaking of these things as if they are distinct and unrelated most of the time. US people are very US-centric such that when you look at how they perceive these bits of information it often comes to light that many of them believe sincerely that they will have more personal pocket money at the end of the year coming back to them because the money isn’t going to Ukraine anymore.
Updates from Friday morning:
Vote totals continue to creep up, and I’ve been doing more checking on state websites instead of depending on aggregators.
Most states are approaching full reporting. Oregon and Washington are both over 80% reported now. The two states with significant votes outstanding are California and Arizona. At 60% reported, we can expect 7 million more votes from California to meet 2020’s numbers. Arizona is 76% reported so we can expect 800k more votes there.
Current total counted votes is 143M including 3rd party candidates. With only 7.8M votes outstanding, we’re still almost 8M short of 2020’s total.
Something is still very wrong with this math. Either turnout was WAY less than reported, or there’s shenanigans.
I’m not sure about #11, either. Not all places?
I imagine it will be the topic of conversation for representatives (not enough leaders though) at COP29, not as part of the agreed programme, but in every coffee break and in every hallway.
Many will die within it.
This is NOT a contest.
The whole world is less safe than it was a few days ago.
florida-da had fewer voters turn out than in 2020. I’m afraid many people stayed home. that, and the Miami Cubanos went all-in on tRump.
Yeah. The University of Florida election lab claims 152.9 M votes were submitted. I assume they were getting that info directly from state election officials. That would be a drop of 5.1M votes from 2020 and…that doesn’t make sense. There was record new voter registration. There was record turnout of women, young people, etc. Voting was easier across the country than previously, with more states allowing early voting and vote-by-mail. There were still restrictions in some area, as @chgoliz has pointed out about young people and signatures/absentee ballots. But those restrictions don’t add up to many millions of votes.
Something stinks. I think our elections are very secure at the voter/ballot level, but it seems like a relatively small number of bad actors on a higher level could make that kind of difference. It would only take manipulation of a handful of counties to effect a huge difference.
Just had this exchange with the host & executive producer of The Young Turks over on the Substack site. Seems like everyone is bending over backwards to normalize Trump and hold the Dems to a wholly different set of standards to explain the election loss.
Glad I’m not there
“Issues-based…” I assume that sentence finished with “campaign?” Yeah, issues like blood and soil, keeping women pregnant and in the kitchen; you know, issues. [hand waving]
Here… happy?
I’ll never talk about how scared I am again. Clearly, it’s not important enough to express my own fears. I should always center others. I always forget, that despite years of being told I don’t matter, that I don’t matter. I’ll try to remember. Sorry for anyone who I offended by trying to talk about how I feel. I’ll do better.
